Operation engine swap.

look at reply 71 & 73! they give the bar two differant numbers from a given gearbox number.. so they must differ otherwise they would not of changed the part number......

They may well be different but not in length from what I can see which is the perceived issue. There are different part numbers for the final rod too but the difference is in the oil way cutout to reduce clutch drag.

Looking at motor works those part numbers are according to them not related to any change on 2017 bikes. The early part number was only used on engines built pre 08/13 and were updated after that along with the front rod I mentioned to fix drag.

Time will tell

Finally done it.
As believed from the beginning despite being told otherwise by BMW the rod on the 2017 engine is longer.
Clutch working like a dream now.
Just got to put the bits back on tomw and the job is done.
Will put up some before and after pics.
Thanks to Santa for his ‘rod’ input.

Nice one Neil. Bit of persistence always pays off.

Me thinks some bmw parts lists are not correct.

From experiance -

If a part has more than one part number or revision numbers then it will be different ;)

otherwise why have the same part with two part numbers

Exactly. Pity BMW insisted they were the same length as I wasted a day or 2 trying to make the shorter travel work. :banghead:

Anyway. Get it finished and on the road. Photos to follow....

std DO practice is if a part changes, but is interchangable with the existing, they will up revision the part (eg, they changed the material spec of the rod but everything else remained the same, or they added 1mm to it, but it can be used with all the other existing parts in the same aplication)
Where a part changes and its not retrofitable, they will change the part number (eg, the new rod where 'other' bits have changes as well, in this instance the gearbox, and they will give an intro date or serial number as you see here)

Had no doubt it was different in some way but many bmw parts lists have both parts as 185mm. In fact every part list I could find that declared a length.

Excellent news.

Delighted for ya. Well done :beerjug::beerjug:

Hey Neil , quick question(s) for you - just to satisfy my own curiosity:

Which rod are you comparing the lenghts of in your photo ? I assume it's rod number 11 ?

And can rod number 10 be removed from the bike or is it buried in the bowels of the engine ?

Cheers

Fergus

No9 comes out through the clutch basket or at least did when I changed mine. I can measure it when home as I have a spare but won’t be home until Sunday

I changed no 11. No 10 removed with magnet on stick and no 9 stays inside clutch housing. 57mm long I think for part 9

2015 rods.

Well all finished. Engine ticking over like a dream, clutch A1 and new black paint job.
Not the easiest job, but worth it....

Before. With half an engine..

Then in progress....

Then finished.... Not in that order!
