Out on the road again. (At last)

At last the snow has cleared enough for me to dare ride again. The main roads and busy side roads in Leeds have deteriorated quite badly over the last few weeks so I did not know what to expect.
The roads out of Leeds towards Otley have broken up and have a few pot holes, once past Harrogate towards Masham on the back roads they are in very good condition. They are covered in mud, grit and debris but are not damaged. The road over to Lofthouse and Patley Bridge is only just passable between snow drifts and is also in good condition. Its only next to the reservoirs any pot holes are showing. The road edges have taken a bashing though, and I would not like to put a wheel over the side. It can only get worse as the traffic increases or we get heavy rain.
Have you been out yet? what are your local roads like after the snow?

Was there much salt on the bike when you got home?

The bike came back fairly clean. I could see salt but the roads were almost dry so it did not spray off the wheels much. The water I came across on the roads was flowing so it was washing the salt away. Its taken 20 Min's to give it a good wash and spray with Scott oil but I was pleased how clean it was.

I was bullied into getting my 23 mile old GS out today by t'missus, but had a really nice ride up to Bolton Abbey - Burnsall - Grassington - Skipton and back home

Saw two Mk.II R1200GS's in Keighley, a yellow Mk.I in Bolton Abbey with a Transalp and a XR400 (?) and then another Mk.II R1200GS near Keighley on the way home.

Bit embarrassing when we got back to Trudi's parents house (where I keep the bike) as all three of them started taking the p*ss about me being frozen and having to warm up so I could find my todger before going for a pee

Yes been out myself to-day, managed to get her in doors to come also, just had a quick run out to Skeggy, roads dry not a bad ride realy had a nice ham n cheese toasty and a latte just off the sea front, then home, but started raining at Louth (bugger) now I have all the gear to clean as well as the bike.

Group of us went up to Sutton Bank then over the wolds to Brid then back to York last sunday. Beautiful clear skies 6-10 degrees and and drying roads. Quite lovely, especially with the snow lined roads up over the tops.

Are there many lanes out in Lincs, I used to live in Horncastle in the 80s and there were a few small lanes kicking around. I am planning to come visiting old friends over that way, so may try and mix with a bit of laning?

Would be good if someone else were around to show some routes.

In my original post I stated the road over to Lofthouse and Patley Bridge is only just passable between snow drifts and is also in good condition. I have been over again today and the snow is fully off the road revealing just how bad it is on the edges. With the extra traffic now using it bits are pulling off the road surface all over, It will soon break up to massive pot holes. I have also noticed some very deep holes in the verges, the main road has started to collapse into one just past Stump cross caves.

Sat 6 Feb and my bike was booked in for a service. I borrowed a new F650gs for the morning and set of for Fizor just above Settle. It was a cool 4 deg and misty at low level but the fog was so thick over the moors to Keighley I dropped back to the smaller roads along the river. At last I began to shake off the winter wobbles and enjoy the riding without the constant worry of snow and ice.
We arrived in Settle with 5 deg on the screen, clear blue sky was almost visible through the thin mist, as we climbed up Bucker brow we hit the heavy fog again and the temperature dropped to just above freezing.
We took the Settle bypass back and I was surprised at the ridge of gravel which has built up where cars travel in one lane only, make overtaking very difficult.

Been up to the North Yorks Moors this weekend and found the road between Stape and Egton is closed, with a TRO in place till June 2011 reason given on the TRO is surface deteriation. We rode across it and found huge areas of tarmac missing great on a trail bike not much fun in the family hatchback.
