Hi All

Was out for a run on Saturday with some pals- All very steady riders. I was leading and up the A1079 from South Cave to Market Weighton I had a bit of trouble with a car driver.

A few tractors on this road so the car mob are always a little stessed to say the least. Traffic going at 40-45 and me and my pals are doing 50-55- very steady.

Overtake a car -check my mirrors to see if my pals are still there and the car I have just overtaken has accelarated and is immediately on my left, using up my space. I am now on the right side of the road with no way to go, with a car coming in the other direction. I brake and move behind the car I have just overtaken.

In my 32 years of riding I have never seen anything so stupid and dangerous as this.

Therefore I am very angry.

Before the next roundabout I overtake the car again ( renault laguna- just a driver- guy about my age- 50 or so. )

I gesticulate to this guy and he gives me the both hands off the wheel- get a move on -sort of look. I stop at the rundabout, put my bike on its stand and walk towards his car, which is parked away from me.

Have very strong words with this guy who obviously denies any wrongdoing- only when it looks as I am about to smack him does he say " you were dangerous as well". At this point I am about to take off my gloves- I just manage to control myself and walk away. I am a finance professional and I have too much to lose if I were to be up at court for GBH.

Still I somewhat regret not hitting this guy, I think this may have taught him a lesson more than my angry words.

My brother died in a RTA and it was probably a guy like this who killed him.

Watch it out there guys- there are some very dangerous people about.

Saw the same thing myself on the way to work a few years back - the d*ck head deliberately closed up the gap whilst a 125 was overtaking and nearly caused a head-on collision.

He then tried the same thing with me, but he couldn't out accelerate a Thundercat 600, so I then slowed right down to walking pace and he backed right off. Maybe not such a clever idea at the time, but the red mist had descended...

It was a long time ago, but I did exactly the same thing to a car driver who cut my mate up.

When my girl at the time was learning to ride a bike she had an SR125

Very often dickheads in cars would close right up on her but when i passed them and got back between on a remus'd up GS and "dropped" in hard in front of them they soon backed off

I can;t remember how they got between us but they did Another one was Max on a charity day trip to Scotland on her R850R and this Twat in a SWB Transit did an overtake on the line of bikes moving at a steady 50 mph, where there wasn't one to be had safely in a car never mind a van and he dived in between Max and the bike in front and slammed the brakes on as a car came the other way

I was restrained from offering him my opinion of his driving by members of the bike club when we stopped at roadworks a mile or so on!

I find a very useful tool when dealing with 'tools' like this  is the book Roadcraft.
It arms you with the vocabulary to describe exactly the circumstances of the 'incident' and use it 'as evidence'.
Points to ponder;
~ it makes you clearly describe what happened and whether you had any ... negative input that only made things worse. :augie
~ it can scare the shiete out of a driver (coz you will sound like a H'officer of the law giving a statement in court - and how are they to know you are not? :green gri )
~ and it indicates to a Real Policeman, when* you give a statement, that you do actually know WTF you're talking about.

*if you insist on 'engaging in discourse' with another road user - sooner or later you WILL find yourself giving a statement - whether as a witness or 'the accused'!

Not preaching here - Do as thou wilt / but be prepared to pay for it. ;)

Finance professional wtf has that got to do with it?

Nice of you to ask pal- its just that if I was up at court for assault and lost I would not be able to trade and would lose my income and most likely lose my business too. So a real downside there.

A pal of mine had a fight with one of his tenants and is looking at 4 years inside....

Easiest way to sort this is - you are the rider, responsible for yourself and your own safety - dont put yourself in that position if you are on for an overtake do it and make it stick, plan for the disckhead in the car and if you leave the "gap" to your left open "expect" it to be filled (rightly or wrongly). The first the driver in the car should have known about you is when you are in the space in front of him.....

One thing I learnt a long time ago - NEVER EVER gesture to another road user especially if it can be antagonistic to the situation, you can be a Champion kick boxer and he / she could be a weedy arsed featherweight waste of DNA BUT they are in a car and that is a fooking hell of a weapon in the hands of a disgruntled driver! (Bike meets car = bike will always come off worst!)

Dont take this the wrong way but every time anyone gets on a bike it should be a case of ride for survival, fact is you could stop one dickead and give them a bollocking but there are thouseands more waiting round the corner......

(P.S not saying anything was your fault just a way of saying the only person that will look after you is YOU):blagblah

All good points pal. Well said.

Ok so are you saying that you have to pass a CRB check do do your job?

Seems best not to confront people if so!

Personally I don't need to justify not hitting people it's just how moral compass is set.

Worrying to think that folks only reason for not attacking others is there job!

I've often thought its macho bullcrap, I would have hit him but etc etc

You guys have got to start using my method, reach in the window/open door delete whichever does not apply, pull keys from ignition and throw the fu@kers as far as you can..i tend to aim for thick undergrowth,or over rooftops. Then calmly walk back to your motorcycle and ride away leaving turmoil and fury behind you, with the knowledge that this Ahole is gonna be now holding up traffic for sometime and wondering how he's gonna get home and with all his keys gone get in to his house.....more satisfying than a punch in the mouth and much more fun......

The 18 stone 6"4 ex para is going to sit nice and still while this goes on :nenau

If you approach them e.g the aggressor open there door/reach in there car legally speaking they could run you over or stab you with the first available object citing self defence and you wouldn't have a leg to stand on (pun intended) but the good news is you can keep your job! If its ok to do it from a wheelchair!

What a bunch of chest beating nobs, it's much Easer to beat the wife and kids and you will more than Likely get away with it. Unless of course it's all hot air formed from years of simmering compliance.

All a bit difficult if the car has been stolen and hotwired in the first instance, then the driver just drives over you and your bike and you end up as being the cause of the traffic jam. :thumb

I would have called the police and told them you were driving too slowly and causing a traffic tailback.

apparently, they would have been there like a shot .... :mmmm

An alternative may have been to have held back at the roundabout, let the bell end sod off and carry on riding and calm down a bit. As has been said, there will only be one winner between a car and a bike. Why risk the epitaph 'It wasn't his fault!'
