Overfilled oil

A wee queerie, guys.

It seems my 1150 got inadvertently overfilled with oil- only just above the sight glass (with engine cold) so maybe 200cc or so, maybe less. Anyway, I removed the airbox drain plug after a run and oil poured out. The oil drain plug was subsequently removed briefly and then the oil was topped up to the halfway point on the glass.

This was all discovered just before leaving on holiday on the bike. I checked this morning after covering about 120 miles and a small amount came out the airbox drain plug- maybe slightly more than a tablespoon's worth. Have now done about another 250 miles and plan to remove it again in the morning. The bike appears to be running the same as usual and I can't say I've noticed any smoke. Anyway, the question is, should I open up the airbox and clean it out and clean inlet rubbers, throttle bodies and spark plugs or is this quite normal and nothing to worry about? I have seen this before on an 1150 and the inlet rubbers and throttle bodies were coated in oil.

I plan to open up the airbox in the morning and have a look. Just wondered on others' thoughts.

Cheers

Seeing nobody has answered, I'll have a crack at this one...

"Rubbers" ( most likely Viton) should be fine & as long as no oil is oozing/leaking out of the engine, it would be a case of "as you were but be a little more careful next time"..

Leave it alone... it'll be fine. - the more you mess - the more you worry. so don't!!!

if you ever over fill again.. its much easier and less messy to remove the oilfilter and empty that - than start messing with the drain plug.

200ml overfill?? - no problem. (I would've just left it.. and drained the airbox.)

opening up the airbox is completely pointless btw.

The oil should be filled to top of the sight glass and not the middle. But at least you had oil in it. :eek
The only real way to make sure you put the right amount of oil in is the measure it as you put it in. I recall its 3.5 lites without a filter change I think its another quarter litre with a filter change.
200 ml will be within the capacity designed in for overfilling and underfilling an engine.

No it shouldn't.

Anywhere between the top of the red ring and the bottom is fine. :rtfm

As for cleaning the air-box, don't bother, the section that catches the excess oil is separate from where the air filter is housed.

Hi guys:)

Thanks for the replies.

I took out the airbox drain plug this morning and maybe two teaspoons worth came out this time.

I opened up the airbox and had a look. Of course, there's that grill under the filter so there isn't much you can do. I loosened off one of the inlet rubbers / tubes. There was a wee bit there and a light coating in the throttle body. As I said, I've seen this on an 1150 before and it was worse.

Wondering now whether to buy a wee wire brush and pop the plugs out and give them a clean. Am I concerned about nothing?

I'm wondering if maybe quite a lot of bikes have a bit of oil in the bottom of the airbox and this is quite common.

Anyway, thanks for the replies.

Cheers:thumb2

Take your worry hat off, and put on your crash helmet instead.

Thanks:)

Just the kind of advice I wanted to hear.:thumb

Low is better than high

If you want to be prudent, keep the oil in the LOWER half. There is no reason at all to keep it in the upper.

i always found my 1150 used more oil if topped right up. kept in the middle, it used less :eek

Not odd; when you add oil you increase the pressure and more oil is liable to leak out.

If it helps: Mine does the same.
