is this a common problem??????i have got 2 and half year old gsa....59 plate........and the rear frame paint is flaking off big time to the point where can scrape it off with you finger nails.......should this be taken up with bmw or what.....my dealer has not been too helpfull....but there must be something i can do.........but what......???

You can try with BMW to see what you can get.

The paint quality is crap so your best bet is to get some hammerite smooth and spend an hour with a brush:thumb

I know it shouldn't happen but it does and hammerite will cover the job nicely. I know someone will come along in a minute or 2 and start on about "unfit for purpose" and it doesn't happen on a hon/yam/suz/kwak" and other stuff but I'd sort it myself and go for a ride:thumb

To be honest i bought my 2008 gsa a month ago and I've noticed a flake of paint missing on the rear sub-frame where the pannier frame clamps on, I'm just going to paint it my self.

At least that way you know its done properly :)

We did have this discussion fairly recently .... and purely a personal observation but it appears to be a problem with the black paint on the GSA frame, whereas the GS silver paint is much tougher.

Stevenage,

From this sunny corner of Hertfordshire came the worlds finest motorcycle, my
1951 Rapide has no paint probs at all. So what happend to good old stove
enamel?.
Dave GS (prair mat always pointed towards this hallowed land!) (even if he 'carnt spel!)

mabe a good idea,,,,

well i may give it a go and repaint the damm frame.......even my worst effort cant be half as bad as the germans paint job.......what is the best paint to use then......never been a fan of hammerite.....

I had a similar issue on my 2010 GSA. BMW replaced the rear frame
out of warranty and my dealer was to say the least not interested.......so a total rub down,,,,,paint and this rust bucket is getting sold.......i would take a chance with a new one....what do you think?

So you are going to sell the bike because the frame has a little rust on it:nenau

Rust

Much better result with a can of halfords BMW black paint. Rub down and spray prime bare metal first. Just done mine on a 2009 GSA, you will achieve a near perfect match to the original colour.
If you give the final coat some quick short presses / spurts you will achieve the stock spatter effect ...... works a treat.
Good as new ...... in fact better than new !!

Have a look with a magnifying glass at where the paint is flaking. If it's the result of stone chip damage you'll see signs of the impact. If this is the case you're unlikely to get sorted under a post warranty claim.

If the paint is flaking without mechanical damage it may well be a problem from original manufacture which BMW will look at.

If you have any photos you can post I may be able to give a more concrete opinion.

I'm just waiting for the paint to come off, my mates GSA is a little older than my 09 and he's patched his up in a few places. Mine has paint bubbling and blistering on the right pot but not the left.
"did you wash it with BMW approved cleaner sir? No? Fairy Liquid Sir Oh! Salty Sir!!"

If the paint has bubbled then corrosion will already have started, scrape it off, prep and smoothrite or go the whole hog and have it powder coated

well that may be...them german

:JBthe price they ask for these bikes they should not rust.........its beyond a joke i say......and the dealers should were masks.......robbing bastards.....like i say i would not part with any more money on these overated bikes.........and overated price,,,,,,,
