My minds eye
I've decided to fabricate a set of panniers for my gs1100, but not having any sizes to go by, would someone who has a set of ally panniers please give me a hand?

I could do with some rough measurements, (l)x(w)x(h) as a basis to work from.
Could someone who has some fitted also let me know if their n/s one is smaller, to allow for the exhaust, or just features a cutaway.

Many thanks in advance.

Si

if you click on the picture of the zega panniers, you'll get all the sizes.
touratech sells one big/one narrow combinations and special lh cases with an exhaust gap.

For the hassle it is just buy a set of verns - most excellently well made.

Surely if your fabricating a set then you have the bike to hand and know how large to make then and where to do the cutout and what size you want :nenau

If not make em 50 x 30 x 45 which is the rough dims of my old jessies.

Thanks for the advise.. Yes, I do have the bike to hand, but thought it easier to get a rough starting point :)

Heres the Dimensions you Req. http://www.cajasahel.com/panniers.html
These have an Exhaust cut out as standard.
Its a lot easier to make the Exhaust side 9" instead of 10" and mount it
proud of the Exhaust.
I also offer the n flat Bar which will make ,it a lot easier when making the
mounting racks.

As a Personal preferance , its weld all the way .
Rivvetts are Functional , and some makers actually claim they are better .
Theres Some Crackin Alloy Glue out there as well at the Minute ,, But its
really expensive.

Lets see how you get on

Alu Panniers

Hi,
I made a set of panniers for my GS last year.
I had Givi frames already on and I mounted them to these.
Made the side panniers first and then the top box. Tailored the sizes to the width of my bars - which also allowed me to get the bike into my back garden.
The exhaust side one is slightly narrower.
They worked out at £85 / £90 each and I used 2mm alu on the panels and the right angles were 1.6 mm. The top box base was 3mm.
They have survived the winters riding, with no leaks etc.
Some pics attached.
I hope this is of help,
Cheers,
Mac

Lovely Mac, that's just so industrial looking :) and the satisfaction when you've done something like this is great. Thanks for taking the time to add to the thread.

Everyone else who's added their two bob's worth, thanks a bunch, you've all been most helpfull.
Would love to have thrown some business redcaps way, but I've got a fitted workshop, and a long time served as a fabricator, so I'll treat myself to a little self-satisfaction :)

Thank you all once again..

save yourself a lot of hassle and expence get yourself two jerry cans and cut the tops off and hinge them then its just a case of adding a thin aluminium strip to the bottom half and fitting some hasps and padlocks to keep the scumbags out:green gri,,,been useing these for years fekin great:thumb2

I like home made stuff & was going to make some boxes, as had a rack given me for the 1100 but a mate told me about alpos cases .
Awsome cost £154 for both delivered ,& an hour to make some mounts totaly water proof to :D

MAC 163.....What are dimensions of your Ali Top Box and will it take 2 full face lids ?

They are just so wrong, in a right kind of way :clap

Alu panniers

Hi Harry,
I made my top box specifically dedicated to take my camera kit [ very keen photographer ]. My old Givi box in the first pic would take 1 helmet [ never tried 2 ].
The top Alu box is smaller and will not take a helmet.
I wanted my side boxes to be less than bar widths - I have to do a lot of filtering and am inclined to keep my boxes on.
Dimensions for interest -
Top Box - 500 mm wide by 370 mm and 260 mm high.
Exhaust side box - 540 mm long by 180 mm wide and 360 mm high.
Other side box - 540 mm long by 210 mm wide and 360 mm high.
Must say with 2 mm alu these are extremely strong and I was aware that if I drop the bike they will have to take the full weight - this has happened twice when fully loaded on tour in gravel and they supported the bike fine.
the same can not be said evidently of the Alpos ones.
In the end it's a personal choice.
Cheers,
Mac
