Pinking

I have noticed my 2018 GS1200 has started pinking when accelerating in 5th or 6th - its only done 16000.
Any advice

Are you lugging it and fearful of getting the revs near the redline?

IIRC knock sensors aren't fitted to the 1200 LC unlike the previous twin cam bike.

they detect "knocking / pinking " , and then , the ecu will adjust the fueling/mapping/ignition , to reduce /eliminate it.

Pinking has occurred on engines for years..... Knock Sensors are relatively new.

Has any work been done on bike? Air filter maybe? Anything on the intake side of the engine? If it’s getting air in where it shouldn’t it could be running lean. At 16,000 miles it probably didn’t need plugs but if they have been changed for the wrong grade it could cause your problems. Your first thing would be fuel. Try a different grade. JJH

Thanks for your patronising comments I have ridden and driven for over 40 years, I can assure you that I know what pinking is, but I might not always know what the cause is.

Overheating.
Incorrect fuel/air ratio
Incorrect timing.
Any combination of the above.

Try taking you bike to an authorised BMW dealer -that's my advice.

P.S. knock sensors have been around since the 70s, hence my comment.
