you are new to bmw aren't you? :comfort

bmw's approach to faults goes a bit like this:

deny any fault is anything other than an isolated incident. continue to manufacture the faulty item.

fix anything under their, admittedly rather good warranty and usually first rate dealers, for 3 years.

after that, you need to rely on the grace of their "goodwill" policy (as long as you have a cast iron bmw service history).

after that, you'll be paying for everything.

if you're lucky, they might introduce a part that works 5 years after initial failures (see fuel pump controller and EWS immobiliser).

often, nothing seems to get done that works. see: leaky bell housing seals (all models), final drive units (1200), exploding R/H cylinders (1200), shit paint (all newish bikes), 60K para driveshafts and gearboxes, detachable valve heads (airheads) etc.

call me a cynic if you like.....

BTW i've not had many of the above troubles over several beemers. none have ever left me stranded.

Fuel Pump Controller

54 plate 1200 GS
12500 miles
Riden twice a week but not much through last winter
No issues to report

R1200GS 10.2004 , 42k miles (66k km), no problem but I keep one spare controller under the seat all the time. I also bought a bearing for the FD (no problems there as well).

Weekend driver , no off-road so far, in Holland you have to pay to go on a special off-road track for that :comfort

However this year BMW failed me twice:
1. Flat back tire - spike
2. Dead battery (original one finally died after 6 years of nonstop abuse)

(No BMW road assistance subscription)

bmw

i am on vacation with my bmw 1200 gs year 05
i was last week in one remote location in kreta island greece
i went for swimming and when i reterned to the bike the bike started and imidiatly died.
nothing helped to get the bike alive.
i have noticed by taking the removable pipe that gives gas that the gas was not coming.
i wait 2 days for the road help from my insurance to locate me and come to pick me up.
took the bike to the service of bmw in chania krete and fixed the problem in 5 minutes.
always carry one of that as spare when you go far away.

- 05 GS1200
- 12k miles
- not ridden in winter but seen quite a lot of rain (touring Wales/Ireland!)
- Several long periods unused and stored in garage

No problems so far - have carried spare FPC for last couple of years

no probs

Hi Guys/Gals?,
New bike, 1100 miles,No Problems with my first BMW.I had considered cancelling the bike order, after discovering problems mentioned on here! Having owned italian bikes in the past, before moving on to Triumph/Honda,
i am use to Character,as long as it does'nt cut out during an overtake!!
i hope that the Salesman assurances prove to be correct.
The GS 1200 is not a beautiful bike to look at,or easy to clean. However its a bike for all of my mood swings(Blast,Bumble,Mile Eater & Stress Reliver).
