Poacher turned Gamekeeper ??

Morety , may be a good thing to test ride one as all of us have a different angles on bikes as its such a personal thing. We can write , presume , wonder what its like but at the end of the day its decision that one can only arrive at by trial.
I was sceptical at first as only just bought the 1250 in July and found the joy of the Gs again after the V4s and the new bike still has the DNA ( for me ) but with a new exciting side. I would not test a Guzzi as I just dont like them , along with Honda , suzuki etc but I may be wrong.
Try one you may surprised. This is only my side of the story as so many have posted about their rides , but its only you that can decide.

Have you tried one of these too?

Reminds me of the very first Fast and The Furious Film from 1936

Thanks for your thoughts Arsey. You've raised a number of issues there which I sort of suspected but the jury's out. One of my concerns is they'd perhaps lost the relaxed touring vibe with the new platform. It sits and looks more aggressive and smaller. I was never one to judge the 1200, let alone the 1250 as "not enough". For me, they were both plenty enough, an almost perfect blend of midrange grunt and relaxed low revs bimbling prowess with a lovely balance that made them ideally suited as long haul bikes or just for the pleasure of a weekend away in comfort. Yes, there's the RT, but it's not as nimble or accessible in some ways and the extra bulk always put me off. I decided when I had my 1200GSA that it lacked some top end shove, so took a 1260 V4 Enduro out for a test ride. It had no shortage of exhilarating top end and was buttery smooth in the mids, didn't rattle like a blacksmith's forge and handled beautifully. The huge let down for me was that ergonomics I found weren't as rounded or well thought out as the GSA and unforgivably, it had no low end grunt. I even managed embarrassingly to stall it several times!

I got back on the GSA and it dawned on me that the boxer was never about top end rush or flaw free handling or the last word in smoothness. What it allowed me to do on the 30 mile blast home through lots of rural A and B roads was to make effortless progress in total comfort and I had no problem keeping up with an enthusiastic mate on a KTM990. It allowed me to enjoy the journey instead of focssing on the bike. If I lost that, I'd lose my interest in bikes, so I've loyally stuck with the 1200 platform, albeit in the nimbler and better looking format of the RS.

I can't, probably ever, see myself wanting more. It does everything that I want from it, although I'd welcome a lighter bike.....but I have that in my VStrom for the local trips and crappy weather.

The 1300 doesn't sound as if it's for me. I do wonder of BMW have taken a gamble in removing part of the DNA of the 1200 platform, in order to compete with the V4's of this world? I must try one myself to find out. I may change my mind but even if I did, the price now puts it beyond what I could justify. One thing remains in its favour, and that's it probably retains all the low end grunt credentials, and builds on that over earlier iterations and this may for many, be enough to keep it ahead of the pack. The older GS was never the best at anything but remained the benchmark because of its all round ability and one of the things concerning me is that this new platform might have gone too far down the sports side of adventure, sacrificing some of the touring comfort with the shorter, smaller platform and some of the relaxation of settling into an effortless fuss free characterful lump.

I was VERY impressed with the new bike.
I think it will appeal more to a slightly younger audience, if they can afford it.
It will definitely appeal to those people who always wanted a GS but we’re on top toes.
You won’t be now ! (Well maybe Portuguese Dave ).
The screen is pretty good, assuming the Kings Ears are fitted as an added extra-dunno what the standard bike is like without them ?
But, unless I’m missing something, there is no tall screen available so if you fit the tall seat you’ll have more buffeting as your noggin will be higher up.

Lighter and lower will (they hope?) keep the shorter old gits who already have a 1200/1250 buying them too? As a short twat the 1200 and 1250 were towards the top end of my capabilities size and weight wise especially when 2 up and this hasn't got any easier as I reached retirement age. If you look at the current age profiles I bet BMW customers are mostly over 50 (they all seem to be when I visit my dealer anyway) so they want to hold on to the silver pound as long as they can, though they seem to be countering this a bit by the GS's ever increasing price which seems to have opened a gap up on both the R and RS maybe because they "can" due to the GS's popularity. One nice side effect for me anyway is the pleasantly surprising low cost to change figure I got on my 2020 1250GS TE Exclusive against a new 1250RS SE which I hope to finally get my hands on shortly. Downside I guess will be a significant gap should I want to change back in the future. At least I've still got the pension triple lock to look forward to (for now) ;)

Just back from test riding the 1300 from Bahnstormer, cleverly timing my ride to coincide with a big and prolonged rainstorm. So can't say it was an exhaustive test although I rode it for an hour (they said i could have it all morning but I got tired of the downpour and poor visibility).

It was a bit of a contrast with my 20 year old 1150 GS but I have to say I liked it - at 5'11" height, I am a good fit for it. It did feel slightly lighter (although my 1150 has had cat, and weighty brake servo/ABS unit removed) and flickable (although the heavy rain meant I was fairly circumspect!)

It felt super planted on the mucky Hampshire roads, the heated seat and bars were very welcome and the engine was smooth and willing even if the gearbox/ gear change was still a bit 'BMW' (by contrast with my Goldwing and Hornet).

Has anyone done a fully loaded two-up ride on the new bike yet?

Just with empty varios and no top box
Was wondering if the space for the pillion has been reduced - Karen loves the GS because there is loads of room for her on the back, even though she is only little it would be a shame if they BMW have reduced the pillion comfort.

Allegedly not .

The reason I tried it with varios on was because the first GS I ever tried was a 1200 Twin Cam, which I didn’t buy because the varios didn’t leave enough room for wifey to move her feet back and put the balls of her feet on the pegs when she wanted to.
Don’t know if this is an issue for anyone else

When I bought my LC I fitted touratech boxes as they give more pillion foot room

Getting back to the 1300, wifey felt to me to be maybe slightly further back than on my 1200 LC judging by where her inner thighs touched my hips, definitely no closer
Wifey is I guess average height and build for a Doris, not tall, not fat

We didn’t have a top box on so she was leaning forward more than usual as she didn’t have the psychological security that a top box gives of not being thrown off the back

With that being the only caveat, the back seat is comfortable, there’s plenty of room for the pillion and the grab rails are better than the old bike.
The big screen also protects the pillion well, it’s surprisingly good.
With varios on there is just enough foot room to be acceptable to wifey for her size 39 ladies touring boots, she says she’ll get used to it, so I’ve ordered them rather than another brand

I did manage to gun it a few times, with appropriate warning given, but I didn’t get to go mental as I was on twisty roads and running the bike in

Get yourself a 2 up test ride, with luggage if possible, you won’t be disappointed (y)

The pillion space has increased, my wife says more space than a 1250GS and more space than a 1200GSA. Must be the longer swinging arm as a result of under engine gearbox. I also noticed more room two up and with the bmw top box fitted with backrest👍

Thanks for the comments - will try it as soon as is practical

My saying...LOL Off to Mexico...! The 1400ADV better have a full 1400cc and 115KW/lb-ft , 155hp/NM , a 30 liter tank and aluminum bags at least as BIG as the ones currently on the 1200/1250GS ! You gentlemen have fun without me...LOL
The new Adv version won't be a 1400, It'll have the same engine as the latest version. BMW won't have spent years of R&D plus the £Ms on developing a new 1300 engine only to replace it with a 1400 GSA version...

Glad you liked the bike Arsey and the guys at Maidenhead Bahnstormers are a good bunch (Andy is a good mate of mine and knows his stuff).. I'm with you in that I won't be changing my 1200 GSA for the 1300 version, I'll wait to see what the GSA looks like when it's out at the back end of next year...

However the new M1000XR has definetely peaked my interest and I'll be taking one out in March when they land at the dealers...

I think if your used to the extra bulk of a GSA the new one may seem small , so not a bad call to wait until the new 14 comes out and hope its as good as the 13 .
I came back to the GS this year after a few years out with the Ducati V4s and PP version and found the revisit a forgotten pleasure , but then I made the mistake of riding the 13 and all that changed as I realised , for me , what a step up the new one is and different it is , so have one coming end of this month.
This bike is good , very good. If I could have another Gs as well it would a Twin Cam as that bike was great and different to the Lc versions which would be a backward step for me now , but the old Tc was charming to ride.
