Has anybody checked the driveshaft joints/splines ?

Rumbles in neutral could just be gear endfloat, a loss of ALL drive is either input or output. Not uncommon for UJ splines to corrode and strip, or UJ knuckles to break. Much cheaper to fix than a gearbox.

This is why we needed proper information from the OP. The stuff I described is endfloat but we don't know if the OP is unable to select gears or if he has no drive in any gear.
Being unable to select could be the shift lever seized in its bushes.
All guesswork without information.

Could be clutch but more likely gearbox.

Does the shift lever move freely. The spindle bushes seize but easy enough to lubricante.

Is there any noise when turning the back wheel?

If the box is shot get a used one from a breakers. But a good mech will know that.

Gear shift a bit stif wont go in first didnt try turning rear wheel
ian was workshop mamager at wollaston bmw northampton i will know more on wednesday

My gearbox has been noisy in neutral for at least 20K miles. It is getting annoying but it all works just fine. It quiet when cold.
The gear lever getting stiff can mess up gear shifts.
The clutch is a daft back to front design so the splines wear and input bearing gets more stick than it needs to. Not to mention cost of parts.

Sent somehow.
