well, being relatively new to bmw gsa, (13 months) and consequently ukgser forum,
i notice that many/most post,s on 1200 gs hexhead, are problem posts, or problems with the dealership.

well to be truthful, up to now, i could only have praise for my own bike, i bought a new triple black gsa with everything on it 13 months ago from barry robson in york, in my experience over the last 13 months the dealers have been courteous, and very helpful, and pricewise, very good, and ive met some good people on there ride outs,

as for the bike itself although ive not done massive miles on it, i have been up to the top of scotland on it, over to the pyrennes on it, two up and fully loaded, aswell as a few short day ride outs around north yorkshire, where i can have some fun, :augie with the sports bike riders.

in my short 7000 miles experience as a gs owner my own bike has not missed a beat, and at this moment i have no cause for concern, in 35 years of bike ownership it is the best bike i have ever owned, and has opened up a multitude of options of places to go and ride, which was restricted before by more specific types of bikes,

all i can say is ime absolutely loving it............................ in fact ime going to get it out now,

cocker

thanks johnny i do i love it mate, i love the bike and the freedom it gives you, you know our area better than me or anyone else, and what it has to offer if you look, well the gsa gives you that opprtunity without having to go far,

going up farndale and that way over the little back roads was rubbish on zx10r or r6, the same as going abroad was not great on a husky 450, with knoblies

to be honest as well i don't find the running costs bad, the husky cost me a fortune, and the other recent bikes were expensive and uncomfortable,

where i think this bike gives good value for money, partly due to what it has to offer, in respect of where it can get "2" of us comfortably.

anyway johnny hopefully we get to meet up for a rideout soon.

ps i have only topped up with a less than litre of oil, and used 1 pair of tourance exp, in 13 months i got 6000 miles out of the exp,s
my 600 miles service was £143
and my 6000 miles service plus 1 pair tourances fitted, and brake fluid changed was £530.

No problems

Same from me,Love my bikes 10 plate gsa 30000 miles no problems,px it for 12 plate a month ago that i saw with 750 miles on clock,Took it straight to french alps, switzerland black forest, Happy days

Off to Alps tomorrow, but send me a pm with your number & we'll get out in august

Mine is a 12 plate 7200 miles no problems yet so they might have just about got them right as production stops.

But don't worry the new LC model is out now with a new set of faults for the beta testers to find.

Mines a 08 bike 32000 miles and counting, had a leaky seal in the fd which bmw sorted for free apart from that minor it has been faultless. I love every minute on it and like you cocker im amazed at the places it takes me either on road or off road its a fantastic machine.

BTw get rid of the tourance exp's their rubbish, fit standard tourances i find they grip better and ive had 8.5k out of my rear tire :-)

the exp,s have gone mate, ime on new standard tourance,s now, just getting them scrubbed in round the lanes up the moors :D

I love pretty much every ride on my 2011 GSA too - and that's in spite of a number of problems (which, to be fair, my dealer has dealt with quickly). I think it's the variable nature of the problems that is most vexing TBH - some folks do 30, 40, 50 or more thousand miles with nothing more than the odd blown bulb and puncture to report, while others have a list of failures as long as your arm with less than half that mileage covered.

Off the top of my head, I've had two new clutches, three exhaust flappy widgets, a foglight switch, new cam covers, a throttle position sensor and new throttle bodies all under warranty. Oh, and a headlight bulb :-)

All with less than 24000 miles covered.

Yea its strange how these problems occur, but once their fixed their fixed.

Mines just stopped buring oil about 3k miles ago and the engine is feeling better every time I go on it almost run in u think :thumby:

Good Thread Cocker

I have had my 2010 GS since April and am loving it. Before buying it I perused this forum and it nearly scared me off!

However if you look on any forum for any bike, car, inflatable friends (ahem!) they are riddled with woe. People rarely start a thread like yours as most of us (me included) use forums to solve problems that we are experiencing. I'm really glad I joined the dark side after years of rice burning.

I am still finding excuses to go out on my GS (even though I ride it to work every day).

I have a R1200GS 2010 with all the toys and it's a joy!..... There I've said it!

mines got 53k on it,i rebuilt the fd at 30k.
it had a fuel pump controller fail under warranty,i generally fit a new one every couple of years and keep the old one as a spare.
and one ignition switch .i might fit a clutch this winter for no other reason than peace of mind.
best bike i have ever owned,its a keeper:thumby:

2011 TB with 6k covered totally problem free. Still loving it.
I guess people are not so keen to post 'nothing to report' so the forums always get full of problem threads

Same here, 2011 GSA TB bought with 540 miles on the clock in October and now got 5000 miles on it. Not a single problem so far and long may it last.

I have covered around 200,000 miles on "oil-head" boxers since 1993, after 9 years of riding airhead boxers and a (thoroughly uninspiring) K100. We also use the R1200RT for our bloodbike emergency service.

Despite BMW's image and reputation and as much as I love the BMW's unique combination of comfort, agility, character and practicality, I wouldn't be easily tempted to take one too far out a region that isn't covered by a proper breakdown service: mechanical (drive-) issues and electrical gremlins are more regular than average and costly to fix. The build quality is a little disappointing too (exposed alloy bits, rusty sub-frame), esp. compared to the airhead generations (then again: airheads needed very regular servicing to keep the valves and carbs in order).

Don't forget though that forums are the place for people to moan about bikes, more than praise. Also don't forget that there are loads of BMWs out there and most of them ridden more regularly and all-year round than most other bikes. There won't be as many bad reports on MV Agusta or Honda NR 750 but that doesn't mean those bikes are more reliable ;)

I still wish BMWs were just as well built as they are designed, but since there isn't anything I enjoy as much riding-wise (apart from my Buell perhaps) I am happy enough to keep up with the odd costly repair job. I ust spent a grand on new fuel pump relay, clutch and gearbox seal repair for example - just keep breathing, that is my advice :augie

Mine has 42K miles. 8K with me and no real problems to report. There is some corrosion but it is 7 years old and has been used all year around. Handling is the best I have used and performance has never been a limiting factor.

The handling is so good its taught me to properly use the tyres right to the edge without feeling like a risk-taking hero. Brakes just work without needed constant maintenance to clean out corroded piston seal grooves. It vibes a bit, but its a parallel twin so it will shake a bit.

Jobs to do:
Rebuild wire wheels because there are some small signs of corrosion but they are perfectly serviceable.
Powder coat the front subframe struts. Being protected from stone chips, they really should not have corroded. But its really no deal breaker for owning the bike.
Arrange the next service which is due now.
