Problems with locking keyless fuel cap

The electronic timeout only applies if not within range of the keyless fob, otherwise it only locks when the steering lock is applied.

Hmm, I got the impression it wouldn't open if the ignition was switched on.

I'll shall try at the week-end. If I remember...

You are correct - it is locked when the ignition is on. As I understand it, the timeout is the period for which it will unlock and stay unlocked once the ignition is turned off, but this timeout only applies if the key fob goes out of range. It will stay unlocked indefinitely so long as the key fob is in range and the steering lock is not applied. I suppose the idea is that if you turn off the ignition and then wander off without locking the steering, the fuel cap will lock itself after a short time to ensure the bike's fuel tank cannot be tampered with, for example to siphon out the fuel.

In all the time I had keyless on my GS’s I maybe had a handful of issues with the fuel cap. I also found that lifting the flap, and gently but firmly pressing it shut, that seemed to work.

Do BMW offer a quick release fuel cap? Some of the KTM chaps have replaced their keyless fuel caps with quick release caps, similar to this one.

I know it’s a common issue on the KTMs, but I thought that was the one area bmw had actually got right.
Clearly not

It’s not a common issue on the KTM’s, but some folk don’t want the technology, so fitted the quick release cap instead.

Thanks for the suggestion - but I tried that and the issue was that the cap would not seat properly, there was no click however hard it was pressed, so when the flap/tab was released it did not engage with the slot in the filler neck. It is working again now but just seems to need a harder push than it used to.

I guess a quick filler would take away the worry that the filler cap may fail and be impossible to use, though I guess in an emergency you could always just unscrew the whole keyless cap assembly to fill up. If the quick release caps are not lockable in any way, then that gives an issue with security which may or may not be a showstopper for some people - I have to say I would much prefer a lockable cap.

What I find strange, and not sure if there is or should be a warning light, if fuel cap is left open when riding off, I cannot say as I have been ok up till now with lifting the flap and then pushing down.

reading the ADV Rider threads on ktms i would say its definitely a common problem, i also know several people with 1290's that have had this "problem"

I’m on advrider, and may have read one or two people that had issues. Haven’t read anything lately. Anyway, this thread doesn’t need to go down the BMW vs KTM route, as that’s been done to death on here already.

+1 on that they all have their problems and fixes, does not matter what the brand is. ;)

When I was forced to ride off with the cap unlocked, albeit held down by the tank bag, there was no visible warning that I could see - the only indication was the occasional whiff of petrol fumes! :D

Hmm tank bag, is it one with the locking rings, or just straps, because I am seeing a pattern in most of the problems, the tank bag locking ring is tightened down to much, those that have loosened the ring have been able to open their fuel cap again, with no problems.

Thanks, but as I mentioned earlier in the thread I don't use a tank ring type tank bag because I have concerns about the strain these put on the threaded inserts in the plastic fuel tank. As such the screws on the filler have not been over-tightened, or not unless they were over-tightened on the production line! I use the standard approved BMW small strap on tank bag. Perhaps I should try loosening the bolts a little just in case they were over-tightened.

Would not hurt to try.

When I fitted my SW-Motech tank ring, I wasn't happy, as the fuel cap seemed difficult to open, so removed it and reinstalled the factory bolts.

However, the problem was still the same, so I loosened the bolts slightly and the fuel cap operated as before.

Not to be beaten, I then reinstalled the tank ring, with less torque and all was good. I have since toured 3,000 miles and checking all bolts, they are at the torque I started with, so everything is working and secure.

It certainly matters how tight the bolts are installed. There seems to need to be an exact fitting point for optimum use.
