Can anyone help with the definitive shiming and seals set up when replacing the bendy oil filter. I have a service kit from Motorworks and a Clymer service manual I have also looked on

http://www.ascycles.com/Illustrated_catalog/R100GSPD(91-95)/catalog_frameset.html

And the parts shown and supplied are not the same - the missing link appears to be -
Motorworks don't include the paper gasket - they say you don't need it if Oil Cooler is fitted (and it is) - they don't include the Flat Washer (part 13) which is 34X3 flat washer - obviously this would increase the pressure on the seals if included - if omited I believe that you don't get any oil pressure and damage the engine big time!

The BMW Microfishe is also different -

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0484&mospid=47931&btnr=11_1703&hg=11&fg=35

In that it shows small dia washers at either end of the oil filter - the Malhe filter supplied by Motorworks has an integral rubber end piece at the bottom end but no washer at the front end.

Call anyone please clear this up for me before I put in the oil

Discard gasket and shims. I have been changing the oil on my PD for years and this is the correct way to do it. The paper gasket won't actually do any harm but is not required; the O rings keep the thing oil-tight.

Make sure you have the correct filter for the oil cooler engine as the non-cooler version is different.

This has been dealt with a number times on this and other forums.

Bikes pre 1988 have a filter chamber than is quite thin, the metal shim is needed to prevent the 'O' ring from being cut/deformed. These bikes also have a paper gasket fitted.

Bikes after 1988 have a much thicker filter chamber (3mm) which means that the shim is not required. Also these bikes have a face fit cover, that is they do not require a gasket. Indeed, a gasket should not be fitted as the danger is that an internal oil leak can occur meaning terminal lose of oil pressure.

Don't get tied up in the year change either. The later the crankcase the worse the metal quality and the more likely it is that a stud will have been pulled leading ultimately to a change of engine/bottom end. Look at exactly what filter chamber you have fitted.

There are other potential problems with the filter chamber but they are rare, it is people thinking all the bikes are the same and fitting gaskets, shims etc without thinking that leads to blow ups.

Another variable factor to consider is how deeply the filter chamber is set into the block.
There isn't a 'definitive' answer. Best work it out from first principles for your particular engine. Bear in mind that an 'O' ring needs around 10 - 15% compression on it to seal effectively, and that even if the steel shim isn't needed for protecting the O ring from damage on the later engine, it might still be needed to increase the compression on the O ring.

My personal approach is to measure the depth that the filter chamber is recessed by and from the measurement you get you can work out whether you need the steel shim to increase the compression on the O ring or not. (But almost certainly not the paper gasket, as that will move the cover out and reduce compression on the O ring, with the potential for leaks).

On my own engine, with 1 shim fitted I get a 3.6mm recess depth so spot on 10% compression on a 4mm O ring.

If your oil presure has been fine, and it must have been, have otherwise your engine would have gone pop by now, just use the same as whats fitted when you remove the old filter.

Cheers guys for the help - I'm asking 'cause I ruined a previous PD and had to have a complete big-ends up rebuild. I like the shiming idea to get compression on the filter seals - why does the serivce kit not include all the possible bits needed?
Can I use any old big washer to get the necessary compression?
