R1100 GS Fuel consumption

Just bought my first GS. I am used to riding Ks and early boxers. I am experiencing approx 35 mpg and getting a sooty exhaust. Have recently serviced the bike and been advised to clean out the air bypass ducts (brass screws on the injector manifolds). No improvement! Any advice would be very welcome.

There is a potentiometer fitted at the rear of the bike which can be adjusted to set the fueling. You will need an exhaust gas analyser to check it.

Mine does 45 mpg under normal usage and only once have I managed 50mpg

I get around 45mpg on the motorway and have had up to 60mpg on back roads in Spain. That is 200 -260miles to a tank full.

Once you go over 70ish the mpg drops quickly.

Mine was very rich, I borrowed a CO meter and set it up, it took a few turns of the pot to get it down (its a multi turn pot) clockwise makes it weaker viewed from lying on your back looking up at the pot.
I get about 45 MPG

Some foreign varieties have a lambda sensor I think, if you look on the right side of the bike towards the rear theres a hole in the underside of the tailpiece, even bikes without the pot will have the hole, if you look up into the hole and see a slot headed screw then theres your pot.

My bike had a lamda sensor (now removed) and also the CO pot. twas a german import. heres a pic of the pesky little bugger.

ok heres the question,i have no potentiometer so can i fit one.bike runs great apart from low down revs.i fitted a beige ccp but fueling got worse it was fouling the plugs just off revs so i,ve refitted my pink ccp and is better but not perfect so a bit of adjustment with this pot adjuster may do the trick.what do you reckon

I read a thread over on ADVrider where somebody has retrofitted the pot, apparently the connector is there for it, so it must be possible.

I would imagine you can get the part easily enough from Motorbins/works/sherlocks. They will, i would've thought have them sitting in their parts bin from broken bikes.. it's not exactly a part thats in high demand.

And how many litres does it take to brim the tank on the centre stand? In the case of my bike, my habit is to fill up when it falls to a consistent 2 bars. this after aprox 140 miles. I can usually squeeze in about 15 litres. This implies a pretty hefty 'reserve' of at least 7 - 8 litres. I guess the float mechanism is a tad askew.

On my plastic tanked 1100 (a bit bigger than the steel tanks I think?), I get 250 before I see the warning light.

Speaking of fuel and tanks, if I fill mine (just to the bottom of the internal metal neck, not trying to squeeze every last litre in) I get fuel dripping out of one of the breather / overflow pipes. Does this mean an internal pipe has split?
