Finally getting round to fitting the 1100 final drive on my 1150.

Is there an advantage to fitting an 1100 final drive to an 1150, or just a case of it fits and was available?

Is it a complex job?

33/11 instead of 31/11 in other words a little more go. I believe it's about 6% lower geared.

Easy job. If it comes apart easy enough. Mine did. I just fancied a little more acceleration and I believe it makes 6th a bit more useable. Test ride to follow tomorrow hopefully

So you bring the 6th gear overdrive lower? How is 1st compared to stock?

It's like like changing a rear sprocket on a normal bike in essence. If you put a bigger rear sprocket on it alters every gear making gearing lower so faster acceleration at the cost of a couple mph top end.

33/11 makes 6th more flexible, but you might get tired of changing up and down like a 2-Stroke... ;)

I seriously considered it for playing in the IOM because I would hit the cut-out in 5th, but then slowed down if I changed to 6th. I decided to go the other way and geared up with an R1100S final drive so all gears are extended including 5th (no longer hitting the cut out). It also means less gear changing required as each gear has a wider spread. Downside is that I use first when trickling in town, rather than 2nd. That's not something I do a lot of, though, so it's a worthwhile trade-off...

You have to ask yourself, what type of roads do you normally use.

If it's A class and below, then the 1100 final drive makes the bike sportier and overtakes in 6th are possible. I find that the fuel consumption is better because I use 6th more.

If you do a lot of long distance motorway then stick to the original R1150 final drive.

Last year I went to Europe on my R1150GS with the R1100 final drive fitted and achieved an average of 52 mpg over 1000 miles.

It's still possible to achieve over 70mph with revs below the 4000 rpm.

But at the end of the day it's a simple replacement task. The final drives are identical in every respect except for the crown and pinion ratios. Whether you swap or not is up to individual preferences.

I can guarantee you will come back with a smile on your face. :D

I hope so. I don't do much touring or motorways. It's a Sunday tool mostly. Been thinking about fitting RT cams too

First quick test drive today maybe 5 miles. First impression was a bit disappointing. Think I was expecting too much. But couple miles revealed a much more eager gs. Acceleration better. Can pull no prob from 1500 revs even in 5th. Will pop front up in 3rd now. Happy so far. Was it worth the cost. Time. Etc.? Not sure. Would I do it again. Yes I love messing with the gs

Stick with it for a while, until you get the feel for it. You'll find 6th more usable. You may find your fuel economy improved. But maybe not if your pulling wheelies often.
:D

If you ever switch back to original, then you will certainly notice the difference.

Happy days

Yeah I will stick with it. I got the feeling I would prob notice the difference more if I switched back. I don't wheelie often to be honest. Don't want the repair costs.

what other bikes have 33/11 final drive fitted to

The crown and pinion assembly which gives you the ratios 33/11 is only fitted in the final drives on the following:-

R850GS
R1100GS
R850R
R1100R

But only the GS models will have the casing that has the two lugs to fit the rear mudguard. The casings are different again, depending on ABS or Non ABS.

Very good in traffic, commuting etc and long distance off riding (Dalton Highway done and great results) no more clutch probs and gear box splines getting damaged. After my expedition I put back the original for two days then re-fitted the 1100 drive, sooo much better.

I believe the 850gs is a lower ratio again. Good for off road think it's 37/10
