R1100gs final drive on 1150

Anyone done this on a GSA? Ratio might be too low :nenau

It depends on what you mean.

If you are talking about fitting the 33:11 ratio final drive to the GSA, then it depends on which gearbox you have fitted. The Enduro gearbox, fitted to many GSA's has a lower 1st gear and lower 6th gear than the standard box. It would certainly make the bike sporty, but you would loose out massively at the top end. But if you have a standard gear box fitted then it depends on how you use the bike.

Hi Ian. Got the enduro box (sorry I thought all the GSAs did?)... it's pretty low already and to be honest does me fine... was just curious really and also as I'm needing a FD rebuild soon.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions as to loosing the top end. Do a fair bit of motorway (unfortunately) so I need it.

Would make an interesting experiment for a weekend though :beerjug:

Did some motorway milage today. 70mph just below 4k 80mph just over 4k. 6th gear way more usable pulling from 50mph no problem felt like a proper usable gear instead of an overdrive. This is a great conversion really impressed by it today on a roads and motorway. Set off in second gear without realising at one point

swapped my 1150GS FD with a R850RT

Hi guys.
I just thought I'd add my experience to this wealth of knowledge. Based on what I have read on this and other forums I went is search of a 37/11 FD from an R850R. These are as rare as hens teeth (especially in Australia) so I broadened my search. A FD from a 1100GS was an option but wreckers were asking $600. I had read that many thought the change from the 31/11 of the 1150 GS to the 33/11 was not really worth the effort or expense. During some late night surfing I stumbled across
https://www.boonstraparts.com/en/pa...)-final-drive-(abs-model)-2000&ID=B10000H00N#
Some emails exchanged to confirm ratio of 32/10 but that was all. long story short - 10 days later I had a 'new' FD in my hot little hands from the other side of the globe :clap:clap for a total cost of $320
None of my reading could confirm whether this particular model would actually fit.
It only took a few hours in the shed to find out whether I had wasted my money.
Basically it all fits perfectly. Make sure drive shaft is phased correctly. Repack any bearings. Use heat gun to soften thread lock. Don't go nuts with over tightening stuff. Fit ABS sensor (ABS doesn't work anyway so not too stressed about this)

The main difference is the R850RT FD doesn't have the mudguard mounting tabs and threaded hole

One option is to just forget about the plastic mudguard thingy completely - I think some do this anyway. However I decided to have a go and cut a couple of bits of flat bar (20x5mm I think) and made up an offset mount that is screwed in with the rear-most brake caliber mounting bolt. i needed a longer high tensile bolt. You might just be able to make it out in the next photo. I also, VERY CAREFULLY drilled a 4mm hole in the flat area for the 5mm bolt of the plastic mud guard. I then used a self tapping screw. Seems to work.

I am very happy with the results. I've only had the bike about two months but had found the gearing to be very tall. I was hardly using 6th gear. The difference is great. It's easier to get going and the gear/rev ratio seems to suit the various speed limits far better. I'm also inclined to think that the 37/11 might have been TOO MUCH of a change. All in all, I'm very happy with the results - especially for the cost.

now .... how can I get a bigger fuel tank ....

37/11

For what it's worth, I've changed to a 37/11 final drive on my R1150GS after I found some shavings in the one on the bike. I absolutely love it. It's given me new confidence in riding the bike through rougher tracks. I have the tall 6th gear, so it's still comfortable up to 120km/h. At 140km/h, big no no in NZ, you feel like you want to shift into 7th gear, a good reminder to back off. But that's not what I got it for. It's for hanging out with friends who go to unusual places. Old house off the Maungatapu track, between Pelorus and Nelson, NZ.
