Hi all,

I’m up to the point where I need to put my final drive back onto the bike.

The manual mentions Staburags NBU 30 PTM, which is about £15 for a tiny tin. However, digging around some site reckon using normal moly paste (or stuff like Moly 60) is ok, but that starburags should still be used to lube the gaiter when it’s put back on.

Any advice from the collective would be appreciated! What have people gone with?

I promise a comprehensive update on the rebuild thread wil come soon….

Cheers
Mike

I've used moly grease and I now have a tube of Castrol Optimal paste I've used for a while... The main thing is keep it simple and don't stress on following every order they give you in manuals...
Greasing gaiters with anything... Never done it...😉

Perfect, thanks gents. Means I can crack on!

Given the choice, would I be better using CV moly grease or moly paste? I’ve got both on the shelf!

If you have the white paste use that but I have used both before... The main thing is at some point you'll probably have a look again and re-do it... It's not a difficult process once you've done it...

You said paste so I assumed you had Castrol Optimal or similar... Buy a tube and like many of these things for DIYers, it will probably outlast us...😆 I have a pot or moly grease that I've used as well that has lasted years...

I brought a tube of the correct grease from local bmw dealer not expensive but a few Yeats ago now.

ive got black moly CV grease in a large tin, and a tiny tin of the expensive high percentage molybdenum ‘paste’ I bought for the same application on my Pan a couple of years ago - it’s the only thing I’ve ever used it for!

As with most things I’m sure I’m over thinking this though.

Here’s a thought, have BMW updated their recommendations over time? I’m looking at a 20 year old manual - obviously technology moves on.

That said, the metal used for the drive shaft on mine is probably different to one on a modern bike, so the question may be moot!

Yes you are...
Most of us have stopped looking at BMs latest thinking...
Oilheads were built to last and paralever set ups are usually strong...
That said few people will ever have touched a Pan shaft and diff...😆
