So you can't start the bike on the sidestand?

How long do you have to wait before you can "rev" (i.e. move off) the bike after you started?

The engine totaly die. So I can not start the engine.
I push the GS down to the high way.

Getting back to the original problem, how much do the parts cost to repair such damage? Labour would be my own if needed (well out of warranty now).

Piston, Barrel, Head casting, Valves, gaskets etc. Not cheap I guess ??

in warranty now. Even out of warranty ,i still think that BMW also will give me an good answer.

new engine, surely?

the con rod's bent as evidenced by damaged crankcase where the piston's hit it.
there's very little of that motor that i'd trust to be straight now. maybe the LH cylinder assy.

it's fcuked :(

isn't a basic engine circa £4K?

bear

the engine failure was caused by the right hand cylinder exhaust valve heads that seem to snap off and being thrust into the piston, causing massive damage. Several engine parts were destroyed and turned into small fragments.

it might be here but it'll be a shed load more in Taiwan, European bikes are almost double the price of here :(

Is there a BM dealer in Taichung now Kevin? I spotted an R1200 on Highway 1 on the section above 74 near the HSR station a few weeks ago, first one I'd seen in Taichung thought there might be a dealer somewhere in town.

I do about 4 or 5 trips a year so know Taichung pretty well but can't find anywhere to rent a bike :( Would like to get out up to Sun Moon Lake and the mountain roads if i could.

Got to be a new engine - I wouldn't trust anything left in that mess, even if superficially undamaged. As it'll be a warranty job, I doubt very much that BMW will spend the labour on a full stripdown, check and rebuild. Left hand head and barrel might be ok......

Dose the GS have a rev limiter?

Yes it does, hit it myself once or twice in second gear when riding hard (such as chasing a show-off down the A43 who'd just cut me up to impress his girlfriend in his Porshe boxster).

Use of the rev limitier is not recommended, the risk of valve bounce and valve-to-piston contact isn't good. It's a safety feature, not a target. The boxer twin design is not meant to rev to sustained high rpms.

IIRC its about 7750rpm or thereabouts.

Dose the GS have a rev limiter?

Yup.

Go out. Hit it. It won't break. It's easy enough in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and on a good day, higher. If nothing else you will find out what it is.

Albeit the bike will be past peak power when you do.

All you will feel / hear is a stutter as the bike cuts the ignition to avoid you over-reving any further. It may feel like you are going backwards, but you ain't. You will be able to see the tacho needle fall back, rise, fall back as the limiter cuts in and out.

DISCLAIMER: If it goes bang, claim under warranty. If it's out of warranty, you should have known better.:rob

Seriously, if you want to hit the rev limiter just to try it for "that one time" experience, find a straight road, open her right up once in second gear, and make sure the engine is nicely warmed up first. It may surprise you the first time you hit it.:D

You ain't gonna break it in normal riding, but don't keep doing it repeatedly or something may eventually let go.
