R1250GS Rattling noise

^^I reckon you have dropped a coin down the front of the seat and it`s now rattling around on top of the engine.
BMW have spent 80 hours on this and tied up the technicians for weeks costing tens of thousands in lost revenue to retrieve a 10p piece.

I notice that the valve clearances on the 1250 are 0.1 to 0.17 (inlet) and 0.34 to 0.41 for the exhaust.
Thirteen to sixteen thou for the exhaust? That`s a fecking huge gap, why so big?
No wonder they`re so bloody rattly...
Lol you must be joking. Have you seen the 20 videos I posted on this noise? If BMW thought it was a ‘coin’ then wouldn’t have disassembled the engine and taken 8 weeks!

And why do you speak with such confidence that they have spent ‘80hours’. Most of the time has been in waiting parts.

Jeezuz christ mate, wasn`t it obvious i wasn`t being serious!!!

Cam timing and valve clearance adjustment close to minimum limit quietens down the engine a lot. Which hybrid battery? Motobatt? Are you happy with it?
Yes I bought the Motobatt hybrid after my GSA let me down hot restarting once too often. The new battery is simply superb, it delivers 350CCA and the bike bursts into life with every tap of the starter button and shows better voltage on the bike info page of the TFT, details in my thread “Big pile of dogshit”, see post #204 for best price.

I never really thought about it in imperial measurements, but now that you mention it……(from memory I think my Hexhead was 0.25 on the exhaust ?)

My bike is a lot smoother and quieter now but you can still hear what sounds like top end rattle from the valve train. It was like a bag of spanners prior to the service.

I thought my 1250 engine was very noisy prior to its latest service at 21k (24k major service), but whatever they did has quietened it down and smoothed it out beautifully. Fitting a new Hybrid battery seemed to help but that could have been a placebo effect.

Its had the big service with all filters, valves and plugs changed so I suspect they reset the valve clearances and cam timing. The service desk guy couldn't see what exactly was done on his screen but whatever they did I am pleased with the result. It just glides along smoothly at low RPM whereas it would lurch unhappily previously.

I was unsure about this bike at first, but now it just keeps on getting better and better. I was so glad to hand back the 1300 loaner and get back aboard my GSA.
Could well have been the spark plugs at the end of their life. There is chatter on the ADV Rider forum, relating to the plugs struggling to last 12000 miles and causing running issues.

Hi All, I collect the bike yesterday and so far there is no rattle noise anymore.

BMW replaced the clutch basket and all internal parts with wear and I need to be gentle for 600 miles as the engine is running in again.

My best guess is the clutch basket having excessive movement, given where the noise comes from (around the front/top of the engine) and that it has bearings and the ability to develop play over time. Apparently it’s just the basket and not the whole clutch. They did however replace the clutch basket 6 months ago but the noise came back after 2 months… maybe they are commonly faulty/excessive movement?

I was strongly advised by BMW to only use the expensive super unleaded fuel, I’m not sure if this is because of the bike or the fuel quality getting worse due to emissions.

Any questions just ask. All the best with your bikes.

Super unleaded only ?

That suggests detonation with lesser grade fuels ??

Yes, but this noise was definitely not detonation. It made the rattle when I revved the bike as well as constantly rattling at 70mph. I think they were just being cautious for the future.

I’ve suspected my clutch as the source of my noise for some time now. My recent 24k major service has improved the top end noise but she still clatters a little on light throttle around 2750 rpm.

I have heard the noise in YouTube videos, but the riders haven’t seemed to notice it. My bike rode lovely after the service with fresh shaft oil!

Took my bike in for its two year service today and the mechanics acknowledged there is an issue but couldn’t diagnose the root cause.

I’m collecting it in the morning and it’ll go back in for an in depth diagnosis in a few weeks.

Is your noise the same noise as the videos in this thread? If it is, then you can tell them that my BMW dealership just spent 8 weeks rebuilding the engine with approved parts from BMW Germany. Best of luck

It’s the same noise between 2000 - 2500 rpm as heard in the video in post #141

With great reluctance, I am going to join the 'Just ride it, you've got a warranty' brigade. The most important thing is that it is recorded with BMW so in the event of a very big bang, they can't say you didn't tell them. Issues like this ruin your enjoyment of the bike and play on your mind, living rent free in your head (Don't ask me how I know). It's worse because you are an engineer. My 1250 makes all types of scary noises that I notice when I haven't got the earplugs in and my riding buddy's new 1300........takes it to another level!! Take care buddy.

My 1250GSA has quietened down a lot since its recent major service with valve checks to an acceptable level, I assume they have reshimmed and retimed the cams…. It will never be totally quiet, that much I’m resigned to.

The 1300 loan bike they gave me with only 3000 miles made my GSA sound quiet, I’ve been an Engineer since 1982 and if I didn’t know better I would think its engine was damaged internally (such was the mechanical noises it made) despite how smooth and quick it was.

I had a chat with both the tech who serviced the bike and the master tech (who looked about 12 years old - I must be getting old).

The software was updated but made no difference. The oil was clean, so no sign of mechanical wear which is a good thing.

The master tech didn’t accept that it was pinking or detonation as the sensors would have logged a fault, so they’re mystified at the moment as to the source of the noise.

It’s booked in for a couple of days at the beginning of August for a more thorough exmination, so watch this space….,

This was my mindset. Then I realised that once you’re outside warranty then BMW will do everything in their power to avoid fixing. Unless you can somehow proceed with legal action there is no body which will hold BMW to account to fix a fault part.

I suggest taking to social media as I’ve had luck complaining publicly towards BMW, whereas emails get ignored for weeks…
