R1300GS / the good the bad & the ugly

Not a lot of use fitting an Akra and removing the baffles if you intend riding anywhere in mainland Europe now, especially Germany. Many countries are getting hot on noisy bikes and cars, with "noise pollution" hot on the agenda right behind the drive to EVs.

Personally I think its no longer worth the hassle of replacing a bikes OE exhaust just to gain 1-2 bhp at certain revs and then be looking over your shoulder or rolling the throttle shut every time you see a patrol car, not to mention roadside drive-by noise measuring devices.
Having had my KTM 1290 SAS for nearly 5 years now. Had Wings can fitted from nearly new including larger of the two supplied baffles and a de-cat stainless headers (not by choice, rather was helping somebody out to sell his bike) from around a year and a bit old. Rode like this for a best part of 16k miles in France, Spain, in the last 3 years, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein, Germany, Luxemburg and Belgium In 2019.

Next year there is a plan to go to Germany and Austria again, so planing on fitting OEM headers for the trip, and fitting smallest baffle into the end can. My legs will likely to cook though with the cat in place. But I rather keep my steed than have it impounded and be slapped with the huge fine.

I have a full akro on the GS it it defo runs cooler without the cat. Rode through alps , Switzerland, Germany this year with no issue, but when I’m touring I tend not to Rev it hard, I may put the original end can on as the performance difference is only noticeable on the pick up. So will keep the akro for off road events or may even flog it all together.

But surely everyone knows that "Loud Pipes Save Lives" ?

An old article here but I assume its still relevant....

Pukmeister I hear you and the EU regulations are horrible and if not stopped will destroy the european car and motorcycle industry completely...EVs are already dead as we speak and have no future but our politicians are like always behind the curve and still dream of outlawing them by 2035...But by then these people and laws will be long gone and people around the world will still happily drive cars and ride motorcycles powered by internal combustion engines and burn gasoline for another 1000 years and the climate will change regardless like it did for the last million of years...
But motorcycle riders pay taxes and have rights too but there is a happy medium between a bike that has a pleasing exhaust sound like the 1250GS had with works-Akra and db-killers removed , a open straight pipes Harley that is pure noise pollution or a 1300GS or new Guzzi where the mechanical clatter from engine and drivetrain is louder than the exhaust...THat is just plain wrong, horrible and embarrassing as also KTM V2s or MS v4 sound like kitchen appliances...In this regard the perfect exhaust should have a hand operated valve where it goes between open absortion to closed reflection like Akrapovic did for the CBR1000RR-R even if the valve is not operated by a switch...IMHO But the sound of the new 1300GS is just Horrible especially for a exhaust made by Akra...!

But it is not a big problem as all you need is to get another exhaust and/or get rid or reprogram the exhaust valve...

Or just buy the new bike , accept it for what it is and not fuck around with it trying to make it into some glorified vanity project .

Arsey when I buy a new bike and spend 30 grand which is a lot of money maybe not for you I make sure that I like it ! It needs to be fast enough to be fun , have good handling as in as nimble as possible and stable not to wobble at topspeed , it has to be practical like a tank that can do 250 miles including reserve , take my gear for 2-3 weeks without having to do laundry and must Sound good like a proper motorcycle ! Bikes that do not sound right dont turn me on but all it needs is a better sounding exhaust and tune to keep the exhaust flap open or even better a switch where You can decide !

I dont think it is far apart at all because there are 1000s of Reggies out there that do 17 inch conversions of the GS to run full on sports rubber and make the bike even more suitable for the Street because they never run off road with also 320 mm rotors up front despite loosing an inch of ground clearance and making the bike less stable at high speeds…The factory could do a much better job with the right geometry, brake / ABS adaption , lower handlebar and more Power to take advantage of the better brakes and 180 or 190 sports rubber…Look at the S1000XR from 10 years ago where people made fun like superbike on stilts which is the best selling S1000 version today with a M model coming in spring ‘24…Why not the same concept for people who prefer Boxer/TL&shaft over a conventional inline-4 ! And the R , S & RS variants if they come they better come with T-L because the R & RS sucked compared to the GS because of the fork…Slower steering , fork dive & less compliant !
I know about at least four R1250GS /GSA converted to 17" wheels. Bike geometry was fixed with custom Tractive 46mm shocks that not only made the bike handle a lot better but also provided a fix for very little rebound damping in the Road mode.
Properly set up suspension will make better lap time than 10HP more.
I've also seen R1250R converted to 300mm travel WP front forks and long travel shock to create something like Megamoto possibilities are endless.
The same R1250R was also mapped and the result was 148HP at the wheel 150NM of torque at 220KG total weight of the wet bike.
There are people out there who can move the rev limiter by 1000RPM while mapping the engine just not sure if this is safe on the GS.

DenzO...I got tractive on my bike but stock BMW cast wheels...! Who did the work to get 148 hp to the rear wheel which would be almost 20 hp more than stock ! 10000 rpm is a little high for a engine without a center-crank bearing as I would stay wih the factory limit of 9000 rpm...Top hp at 8500 and then 500 rpm over-rev not to crash into the rev limiter apruptly. I still am baffled why BMW did not go with a triple bearing crankshaft , aluminum frame and the stupid linked foot brake...??!! And on top made the tank SMALLER which is totally stupid !!

We a up-to nine pages of this drivel now, every reply of yours, to every other person is same old crock of shite. How many more pages of said drivel are you planing on posting?

If you want an upright sitting position race bike with masses of power, 17” front wheel, wanking galore carbon fibre, and much more look at me I have small dick farkles, then go buy a Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak. Then having done so, go and do one!

You just become so bloody boring now with playing that record on repeat for days on end. We have heard your needs and frustrations with the lates iteration of the mighty GS.
BMW are deaf to your outcry. They could not give a flying f@@k about you and your “tears” even if you were to become their brand ambassador and have every bike they have ever produced in your garage, they would still follow their marketing strategy and try to stay above the competition (from their point of view they obviously), rather than chase behind them.

Yours truly.
