Always up for a challenge I bought this sorry looking 1993 registered (1991 manufactured) R65LS

IMG_0044.jpeg

It had been sold off by the owners widow and was a non runner , the guy who bought it couldn't get it sorted and passed it on too the guy I bought it off

He fitted a new bean can ignition unit and wiring harness and got it back up and running

It's very rough cosmetically and has previously had both the frame and the tank/fairing re-painted (badly)

It starts easily from choke and warms up and idles OK and has no oil leaks

Gearbox is nice and smooth and changes up and down well and brakes are good for an airhead (its had a new master cylinder and braided lines fitted)

Decided to take it out for an hour this morning just to get a feel for it and decide what to do with it

Steering seems very vague so I'm guessinhg head bearings need doing as the handlebars flop from side to side way too easily

RH carburettor leaks when on side stand (which doesn't re-tract)

I got about 5 miles from home and came up to a roundabout and the bike just cut out

Pulled the clutch in and tried to start it and nothing happened when I pressed the button

Thinking the clutch switch wasn't working put it in neutral - exactly the same no start

Pushes the bike onto the pavement , tries again and it starts straight up , decided I better head home

Repeats the fault another three times on the way back

Cycling the ignition switch doesn't appear to effect it , the kill switch is working fine as dash lights go one and off and with bike running it kills the engine

Any thoughts as to what it could be ?

Tight wiring harness from RH switch gear ?
Could be pulling the connector onto main loom.
I'll take a look Mike . It cut out twice stood still with no movement on handlebars and the dash lights stay on when it cuts out

Bad earth… loose battery terminal?
Try simple things first!.
Bad connection to coil?

Well having removed the petrol tank the wiring clearly needs some attention and may well be where the issue lies.......

My bet is corrosion on that 3-way connector is the issue... But it was nearly a tie for first position. Also a dodgy starter relay will produce those symptoms. Good luck with your new project!! :beerjug::popcorn

Just had a bit of a closer look at the wiring and the observant may have noticed that the electricians tape didn't quite insulate this connection and it been rubbing on the frame ....this wire goes up to the RHS switchgear and the kill switch , so Mike as usual was spot on with his diagnosis other than it wasn't a wire pulling out of it's connection but a wire shorting/earthing

Hate those awful crimp connectors , they have no place on a motorcycle

There is corrosion in that connector but not that much , the worse one is the one in the far left of the picture , that is really bad . I'm going to de-pin all of the connectors clean and re-assemble them and properly rewrap the wiring loom with harness tape

Rode a borrowed R65LS when they were new and found it a nicer bike than the R80 and R100
