Thumbs up to Steve at Rainbow once again.
I took the bike in for a pre-trip 'once over'. The bike has only done 2,700 miles or so but by the time I come back from the trip she will have done 7,00 miles or so (thus missing the 6,000 mile service). I asked if it was wothwhile Rainbow doing the 6,000 mile service now to keep the boxes ticked in the service book.
Steve the service manager could have told me this was a great idea & taken the cash for doing it but assured me there was no need to do that & that he would effectively be taking money form me for unneccesary work. We agreed on an oil & filter change & a thorough check of any wear & tear to see if anything might be needed, or if it all appeared to be okay.T The report back was as expected: no further work needed.

Steve then offered to talk me through everything I might need to check whilst I was away. He asked what knowledge I had, "Zero" was my honest answer & he proceeeded to take me through all the checks that I should be carrying out on a regular basis. What to look for, what the implictaions were & how the wear would manifest itself on various parts of the bike & tyres.

TBH this is the sort of thing I should have asked for many, many years ago. All I ever do when I wash the bike is exactly that - wash it, dry it & put it away. I now have a very basic understanding of what I should be checking (& should always have been checking tbh), but had never thought to ask for before & probably wouldn't have this time - the offer & suggestion came proactively from the service manager himself.

I know I'm going to get ridiculed for my singular lack of knowledge, rightly so after 35 years of motorcycling, but that shouldn't detract from the great service I had from Rainbow once again.

I say fair play for holding your hand up and now you are a wiser person

My Granda used to say "the stupid person is not the one asking the questions but the one that says nothing yet knows nothing!"

IN reality there are too many "know it all wannabees" out there these days

The most annoying ones are the fuckwits who wouldn't know one end of a combination spanner from the other yet insist on telling you how to fix their bikes! :blast

Steve the only man in Yorkshire who can tell me how much it's going to cost and leave me feeling that I can trust him. To Steve and Leigh, the old guard at Rainbow in the service area. My respect:beerjug::thumby:
