My 02 adv 26k miles starts OK and has the 'death rattle' as normal for a few seconds after start up if standing for a good while.

It has developed a lighter rattle/squeel that last a couple of seconds loger than the above, its difficult to pinpoint before it goes away, my fist thoughts were the cam tensioner / mod , its happened twice so far, any suggestions / experiences
its over serviced oil changed every couple of thousand

many thanks

My 1200ADV 06 39K did something similar. The squeel was from the alternator belt and was worse in the wet when the belt was damp. This seems to have gone away with a new belt changed when the belt cover was replaced under warranty due to corrosion.
The death rattle is still there, I put it down to oil draining out of the head on the cylinder uppermost when the bike is left on the sidestand. Not sure if this theory is based on any fact as my mechanical knowledge of this engine is sparce. I used to have a van that rattled on start-up as it took a while for the oil pressure to fill the hydraulic tappets.

Noises

It sounds like the cam chain tensioner noisy till it fills up wit oil just like the tappets mentioned above, squeaking will definatly be the belt, possibly a bit slack. check the tension as this will affect the charging rate.

What viscosity oil do you use?.Using 15 or 20/50 helps but the real cure is the new style cam chain tensioner.Do a search for part numbers of these parts as you will probably get blank looks from the BWM parts bod;or worse,he will order the old style.Squeeling normally means the alternator drive belt.Take the plastic cover off and check tension and condition of the belt.
If it's beginning to fray, add that to your parts order.

what year did new style tensioner come in?twin spark?

I did my tensioner recently, The old style one in my bike had a 16 or 17mm bolt head, the new upgraded one was 15mm this seems to be an indication, see what size socket fits yours.

thanks for all the replies
squeel was not maybe the best choce of words, for all thoes who suggested alternator belt , good call, i replaced this a couple of thousand ago .
On listening again without ear plugs in it seems to be half engine speed and last a few seconds longer that the normal 'death rattle' at start up so best look at a mod tensioner.
As a matter of interest have been using a 20 /50 oil i changed it about 200 miles ago , (Duckhams) but after reading that it does not have the API rating it should, best change it, allthough it was much quieter in general

many thanks
