Rattling engine and seizing exhaust flap.

BMW are far from being alone when it comes to problems of this nature, as I'm sure we're all aware. Perhaps the problem as such is one of expectation; the marque has always been marketed as a premium product and priced according. Consumers therefore expect, but often do not get, less product defects than other less expensive brands. This has only been exacerbated by the Internet, where issues such as flaky, flaking camshafts may once have been brushed under the carpet by a manufacturer.

They can hardly do that these days, what with to us meddlesome forum users actually discussing these disappointments in real time :beerjug:

I don't care if BMW are alone or not, and yes, my expectations of BMW is that we should not have these issues.. thats why I've paid so much for the bike.
But if they are just as bad as everyone else now, than I for one wont be buying BMW in future... Not being a brand snob, i see no point in giving them my dosh for something medioca.

Their magic ingredients for great riding bikes is spot-on, particularly for the GS all-rounder. The problem is that you cannot be a "premium" marque on the one hand and second from bottom on just about every currently published bike reliability chart on the other. I think that in N America, a recent pole saw only Can-Am below BMW for reliability. Even Harley fared better.

When you consider that you can buy a Jap bike like the V-Strom for a smidgen over £10K new, and it has practically no reported major faults, it makes something of a mockery of B-M's position. Whilst the Long Way Round is still available on Netflix/Prime, and customers continue queuing up for pcp deals on new GS bikes, BMW will continue to sell like hot-cakes and prices will only go one way. Whilst Triumph aren't a heck of a lot cheaper with their latest high spec Tiger 1200 (which imho rides better than the GS having tested one....absolutely stonking engine and great handling), it also continues to win new fans for less money, although they have their issues as well. Beemers are presently looking over-priced for what you get but there will always be those willing to talk the price up! Had they few problems, far between, then they'd start to look reasonable value. That's not the case though by all accounts on this forum.

Would you buy a brand new car that had a confirmed recent history for....

Wheels collapsed, suspension collapsed, engine failure needing complete replacement, rust under paintwork, electrical dashboard failure.....

You'd probably laugh and run a mile in the opposite direction....

You've not bought a MB then and VW dealers are arrogant pricks living on past glories.

BMW are no longer a patch on the 80's early 90's but are a lot less expensive compared to the competition now than then.

All manufacturers have failures, it is how it is handled that counts for more. The stupid lies from BMW UK over we've never heard of this, begs the question have you not come across the internet ?

Well, for sure, (and I’m trying to sit on the fence here) BMW aren’t doing themselves any favours as it’s clear to me that other geezers have (well founded) concerns and observations. Perhaps if they stopped this customer beta testing philosophy the products might be better? But then they may loose the innovation race...... ah well, I’m the meantime let’s enjoy the bikes (if they ain’t in the garage!)

Just had something very strange happen, weather has cooled down to a nice 20C, went for a ride this morning up and down the Black forest mountains, only 350kms but nice and twisty, and really good fun most of the crotch rockets have gone back to work, the mods I done on the bike done their job, bike feels nice, and guess what, I got the bike home in one piece, nothing fell off, or ate itself on the way, however I did get the odd ABS flasher due to the A3,s moving a tad on the damp leaves, but I am still here, the bike is alive, VIVA BMW. :hide:hide:hide:hide:hide:hide

I can see you getting burnt at the stake you heretic lol

Miserable feckers need waking up holidays are over, on a more serious not given you have not had your bike for so long surely the 3 year warranty must start again, or they give you a free extra year.

Yes.. that's what I say.. I have 3 years warranty on my bike, so will see how it goes. Just wish they'd make em like they used to do.... invest in good parts not fixing shit.

Unfortunately that is not how the world is moving forward, things that last mean quality alloys, however melting down old washing machines, does not really give quality stuff. :rob

yup, will be some cheap die cast ali used on the castings for sure... thats why they have to paint them or they would eat themselves first sign of salt....
My r100 was quality metal... no paint needed there

Mmmmm, anyone got a rattling RH cylinder? My 1250 is in for its 6K and I reported it. Initially the dealer hit me with 'there`s nothing wrong and the valve clearances are ok, Sir, they all do that'.

With the valve clearances being `ok` (which is what it sounded like to me - clearances waaaay out) I then thought that there is something seriously wrong with it and strongly requested a test ride - they concurred and agreed that there was something badly wrong. Parts ordered (I bet there`s a camshaft amongst them) but there`s a -7-12 day back order issue.

Paranoia creeps in now, why the long wait? Is it a common fault and BMW can`t get the replacement camshafts made quickly enough? Has this anything to do with the postponed release of a similar model using the same engine?

I am told, (from rumour control) that the case hardenening is coming off the camshafts, causing the problem? If this is the case (forgive the pun) then should I be concerned about the metal flakes hiding in the oil galleries? Obviously I don`t expect anything other than the corporate response from BMW but some of us might have the same problem?

As for the exhaust flap - I`m not a BMW basher (I buy lots of beemers!) but this is such a disappointment! I had the same problem on my 2014 LC and its still here on my latest 2018 1250! The remedy being a complete replacement of the headers just because of a daft design on the ceramic bearings on the flap! Changed under warranty of course but if out of warranty there`s a bill of over a grand for the said headers (I lubed the ones on my 2014 1200) it just seems madness!

As I said, I always try and be fair, take the middle road and avoid Olympic BMW Slaggings but I must say that I am somewhat saddened by this with a bike only having done 6K.

So, anyone had this engine rattling before?

Hi Mark, I got my new 1250 yesterday afternoon from our mutual local dealer, love the bike, awesome grunt, but it has an unusual pinging type of rattle coming from the right hand cylinder. Mentioned it to dealer today and he says they all do that it’s the shift cam mechanism.
I’m only down the road from you in Scunny so I’ll give a ring to see how you got on to save me having to read every thread.

I’ve covered 360 miles since yesterday, I have not heard this type of rattle from the 1200 LC engine and I’ve had x5 of those?

its amazing how they all make noises but different ones depending on the bike? I'm on my 3rd modern GS and they have all had their own sounds associated with each one. So to say 'they all do that' as we know, is rubbish.

Manufacturing tolerance and set up, can be the only reason I guess, but how much variation is there in these things?... I would have thought as things moved forward, certainly the limits and fits would get tighter... so is it all down to build.

was told by my dealer that BMW expected the LC's to be very quiet as has happened in other bikes going water cooled so they made things a bit thinner due to the deadening effect?

Not sure how true that is?

Take it to Marks and you can compare noises.... I like my dealer but they do lie through their back teeth!.... I remember the quote from the Service guy when I bought my first and asked about reliability... 'they don't appear to have many issues, we've not seen any problems'... He's says with 10 bays full of warranty jobs. :augie

Yeah come down for a coffee and a gibber, I’ll show you the fleet :) and run a diagnostic print out if you wish. 07713 789365. Gimme a bit of notice and I’ll get an LC to the mancave
