Rattling engine and seizing exhaust flap.

Ok guys, for anyone following this thread (still). Bike delivered back today (1 day early) with new engine sans rattle. Off to Moffat next week to run it in then back into dealers for first service. I’m to be charged for the brake fluid change (as the bike originally went in for its 6k service). They did do the oil and filter (on the fekked engine) and want me to pay for it, saying that they would do the 600 mile service foc- I have questioned this as I think that for all the disruption they should a) not charge me for the service on the shagged engine and b) as a gesture not charge me for the 600 mile service. I’ve not jumped up and down, just brought it to their attention so I’ll be keen to see how they deal with the issue!

standard procedure, I had to pay for my service on my knackered bike then the next one was free

To keep a good customer who has suffered major inconvenience doing it foc would be the least they should do.

Gotta agree with this Mark, won't do any harm mentioning your "celeb status" on here and how that dealers reputation could be significanlty damaged

why did they service a shagged engine in the first place? don't they evaluate the problem forst before servicing the thing... if they are that stupid, I'd not be paying for sure !

Let us know when you're up at Moffat.

I’m travelling up Tuesday morning with a mate (who’s taking my R9T - brill grim factor bike btw). I hope to arrive before teatime then I’ll be getting proper wasted with my extended family/friends who own the Buccleuch Hotel :)

I’ll be leaving Moffat when I’m safe and legal to drive (obvs) and heading back down to Lincolnshire - 07713 789365 if you need it.

OMG you guys are renting space in my little head! Im new to BMW, got a 1250gs recently and noticed its a loud engine. What sounds right vs not? Can you guys listen to this and let me know what you think

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TBH3mudI9M

By just listening to the sound of the engine, my first thought was : 'Horrible'.

But then I realize that cheap microphones does not always respond equal to all frequencies, thus, it is difficult to conclude based on such a video.

What does the dealer say to this? By design the boxer leaves the cylinders out in the open, and any sound the engine as a mechanical device would makes comes up more clearly than if the cylinders where tucked away. All engines makes a sound, and not two engines sounds the same (thus a dog would easy picke one engine from any other).

If this was my engine, I would, in case of uncertainty confront the dealer. If the dealer says it's ok, I would mail a note that confirms the outcome. If there is a real problem, the noise will pick up to a point where BMW will take action, and the copy of email will prove that this has been an ongoing issue over time.

Engines are like wifes, the only silent ones are the dead ones....

While there indeed have been some issues to an extreemly few bikes, internet has a tendency to blow a problem way out of proprtions. Since this is a thread about a noisy engine, I would like to salute the OP for a rather sober approach to his issue.

I feel that lots of people read some stuff on internet and automatically assume the dealers are cheating crooks that are out to trick you. Over the years I must say that the dealers I've dealt with have been stand-up guys, helpful in any way they can.
It also puzzles me that while some people pays several thousands to make their engines more noisy, the same people enter a flat-spin for a noisy engine (not meant to point to OP).

My advise: After you have talked to the dealer, wear earplugs and be happy. The engines are noisy. If the engine blows up, call BMW assitance, and you can tell your dealer 'I told you so'. Most likely this will not happen, and you may enjoy your wonderful bike in silence, knowing that the nay-sayers hump along on their old wobbely underpowered junk :beerjug:

If you really want to scare yer sen, get a long screwdriver and hold it in a cupped hand; place the tip of the screwdriver on various parts of the engine whilst it's running and your cupped hand to your ear;; should be good for a laugh;; or not,:D :beerjug:

Sounds like one of the good ones to me... you want to hear knackered one

Hahaha, no not again. I saw a couple on youtube and thats what put me in this space...

Man o man, i appreciate you guys big time, were just new to BMW and dont know the sounds and smells yet of a "proper" bike. Over the last couple years, we moved from hotrods into more bikes and thought we wanted big piston loud HD stuff, but over time realized we love adventure and bought a couple hondas 250l and 450l's. The adventure part was cool, but were not so young anymore and dont do jumps, hahahaha, so that lasted a week and bought one of these simply on name and reputation. Yea, did a little research on models and just said lets dive in and bought this 1250 with 3k on it and drove the 1k miles round trip to get it on mon last week. Since then, we put 1,300 miles on the BMW, ha!

Weve been everywhere, up the ocean seaboard here in NE, and all through the White Mountains. Coolest thing, we were off the side of the road just relaxing for a min and a guy cruised by with a GS and proudly lit up his Denali Mega Bomb (hoooOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNkkkkkkkk) as he drove past with a friendly wave...

Anyway, just dont know what to listen for but do turn wrenches and just seemed like the sounds im hearing are like a solid lifter cam, loose rods, something... But if it is what it is, then it is what is is :>)

So get new bumot rails today, decide to look at flappy, as do it every year, and I see metal, no panic I ask wife for dyson, out comes metal, and in go new nickel paste.
