Rear suspension - and brakes

custom are same price..

I thought the custom built Ohlins were more like £900 - £1000 for the rear (hence the two prices quoted by TT). I'm also curious to hear from anyone who has bought the 'off the shelf' Ohlins for around £500. I would have thought that my requirements would be classed as 'average' i.e. Mainly solo, a bit of off-road and the occasional weekend camping with a pillion.
Any thoughts?

Dick:confused:

I am in the market for some Ohlins shocks too. I spoke to motorworks and they said the price was the same for a standard Ohlins or a custom Ohlins - just a 3 week wait. Never bothered with TT! Maybe a custom is the BM515?

There are 2 different for the 1150adv rear, BM215 and BM515. Heavy duty spring and different rate (on the BM515) but not sure what the equates to in the real world of pillion or luggage. Is the BM515 for "hard" offroading only? - anyone?

Have a look here: https://wwwsecure.info/phillipmccallen-com/products/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=155 as they are cheaper than TT and MW...

Will probably buy from them as front is £395 and rear is £436 (free shipping too) whereas MW is £529 rear, £478.40 front. TT is a kidney.

Hey Techno, good find pricewise but they don't list the 1100GS:tears I'll contact them and check availability. By the way, does anyone know if there's any duty or vat to pay on stuff from NI? I know it's a bit different but I bought some parts from the states - around £40 - and had to pay vat, import duty and a post office handling fee - another £24, so please excuse my caution.

Same as buying from Wales, Scotland or IoM.

Same for me. Bought a camchain tensioner for the DRZ and the duty, VAT and fee was more than the the item cost! Sometimes you get lucky though...

215 or 515

Not sure how TT can charge those prices. Just ordered an Ohlins rear unit. Uprated the spring (still get the original) and they are taking care of new valving as well all for under £500 notes. :augie

Was that the BM515 you got instead of the BM215? Why did you get that over the 'standard'?

There is no differnce between the BM215 and BM515. Ok, there is the difference is that the BM215 is fitted with a 140Nm spring and the BM515 with a 160Nm spring. Heavier spring rate means the suspension doesn't compress as much under load. Other than the spring which is a 5 min job to change (if you have the kit) they are the same. Those are the two off the shelf shocks depending on the load.

I specified a heavier spring rate 'cus I'm off on my tod next year to Africa. Not wanting to carry a lot of weight on the bike but big bike + big guy + kit = big spring needed.

I asked several Ohlins dealers what they recommened for what I was doing and they all came back the same.

The idea was also to wind the preload off as much as possible and let the spring take care of it :thumb

Thanks for your opinion, I was only giving mine:augie

I do love it when you say something negative about a product and everyone jumps to it's defence:D

the point i was trying to make was the more punishment you give any mechanical equiptment the more damage you are likley to do.
