Can I get away without disconnecting battery? dont want to remove tank as my QR fuel junctions are a little old n brittle.... gave my spares to a local last year and not got round to replacing them... :doh parts take awhile to get here!
If I am careful an wrap the live cable carefully n quickly will it be ok?

Cheers
Gavin

Click, crackle........Boom :comfort

It will probably be fine, but could go so wrong.

I don't think I'd do it, I'd be more inclined to take off the brittle QD fittings and replace them with a section of pipe.

No probs when I removed mine.

I've got a small piece of garden hose pipe which I flatten with my fingers and push this over the positive lead when it is disconnected to prevent any shorts!

Also be careful when undoing the nut holding the positive lead on that you do not short the spanner to anything metal on the bike!!

You shouldn't need to remove the tank to disconnect the battery. Just undo the securing bolt, lift the rear of the tank and prop it up with a piece of wood

:nenau

It's not worth risking a short / sparks . I changed my starter the other month, whole job took about 20 mins, including resetting the clock after reconnecting the battery.

Lift tank high enough to undo the negative lead from battery terminal. That's all that's needed to be electrically safe.

Why take unnecessary risk for 5 minutes of Additional time.

Thats what I do - undo the bolt, shunt it back a couple of inches and lift the back of the tank - no need to disconnect any fuel lines or anything. Ive got a special calibrated piece of wood for propping that's painted so don't keep chucking it on the fire like I used to :D

Push a piece of cycle inner tube over the connector and cable. Stretch a piece of inner tube over the ring spanner as well to prevent shorting.

Thanks - the squashed hosepipe and a ring spanner wrapped in insulation tape ...
15 mins later and all done! the tricks a girl called Becky taught me when I was 16 helped get the back bolt back in!!

Ta very much - but will have to wait until tomorrow to go out n play .... half a bottle of wine does not help!

will be needing to remove my starter motor soon......would not just removing a fuse solve the electrickery problem?

No fuse on the starter feed (at least not one in the fuse box - not sure but there might be a hard wired one in the loom?).

Battery disconnection is the only foolproof way.

It's a 5 minute task to take the neg lead off.
I've posted how I did it ( starter removal) on the other thread if it helps you.

got it thanks - seems straightforward.....do I get a prize if the old starter hits next door's cat?

Been there, done that. Sparks nicely it does.

So I removed the neg from battery.
removed cover from starter and disconnected wires.
Then removed two bolts that hold starter motor.....then I was stuck.

Starter motor would not shift..how the sod do you remove the starter? Tried pulling in all directions...would not budge.

So put the whole lot back together again...2 hours wasted.

Remove both bolts and the + & - cables. Followed by a bit of gentle tapping whilst wriggling it, should see it start to shift.

5-10mins max to swap mine out last week
