Hi All
Need to replace engine on my 08 1200 GS due to water contamination in the oil etc. and it sounding so rough . Dropped oil and metal is present so need to strip it and investigate further but as i need my bike asap
Can i replace it with a later 09 twin cam engine without any modifications ?
Are the gearbox and transmission different etc.
If i have to stay with 07-08 models are 1200 St , Rt's engines the same ?
Thanks

The twin cam was 2010 -2012.
I would stick with the 08 - 09 engine unless you want to change everything ECU etc,
The fuel pressure on the twin in cam is 4 bar and 08-09 is 3.5 bar just for starters.

Thanks i did post on this but think i deleted it by mistake so here goes again.
I will stick with 08 engine as sounds like there could be problems upgrading.
Can i look for engines from 04 to 09 ? Are gearbox transmission all the same etc
Anyone got spare engine knocking about the want to sell 😁
Thanks again

As a quick fix thought i would get another engine in then hope to investigate and replace what ever is worn in original engine sorted over winter. Iv been green laning it so thought it would be handy to have another ready for next time i go through deep water 😏

Just trying to find any good footage or procedure on complete engine removal if anyone has links etc .
Thanks

Think of it as removal of the bike from the engine:D
There are a few cheats but you essentially have to dismantle the whole bike:comfort
Hope you have plenty of space:thumb

Ive done it and as mikeyboy sez its the biggest job you can do on a gs as everything bolts to the engine, i saved a bit by rigging up the front end and top frame with chain blocks and putting engine in from below but it was fiddly, do a search for submarine gs on here im sure i put pics of it up at sometime.

I had mine apart to have the front and back subframes powder coated. It's A LOT of work.

You would be better to at least pull the cylinders and see if the crank is OK. If it is the engine repairs will be less (or at least no more) work than fitting a new engine.

Thanks
Made a start on Saturday and picking an engine up Wednesday. Will try to post photos if thats possible. 👍
