As the refurb continues, I'm starting to think about modifications. The bike is currently set up as standard with the BM box and silencer (albeit a bit rattly when you shake it!). I'm happy with that set up but realistically, the box will deteriorate, it's already been welded once!

Any thoughts as to alternatives folks? Before anyone mentions it, I'm not impressed with the design of the Keihan Y piece!

Fitted a new collector on my PD a few years ago.

I think BMW made a batch of about 250

I fitted a G/S one many years ago for someone it made quite a difference a little noisier but not greatly so

But Appeared to give a bit better mid range torque

Its only a small canister connecting all 3 pipes

My last one was stainless this one I have is mild steel "I think" I kept it to Make a Jig to manufacture a couple for fun

Y pieces are the work of the devil

Agreed! The G/S option could be a plan but it looks like new pipes would be needed too?

I think I bought the last collector R100/80 GS collector box in the country for my previous R100GS. The system is definitely better with the OE collector box rather than the more pretty keihan Y piece.

Pete is there any sense in getting something custom made ?

Place near me does custom pipes at reasonable prices so I'm told so i would suspect there must be places near you as well

Thanks Rick, that’s an option if all else fails. Ideally what I need is for someone to discover a batch of BMW oem items in a shed somewhere. Like them Spitfires in Burma but in new condition!

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Keihan had amended the design of their much maligned Y piece? Gotta say that they were most helpful when I had an issue with fitting a Keihan silnce to my old GS about 15 years ago. The mounting bracket was in slightly the wrong place. I took a ride down to the factory and they made up a brand new silencer there and then from parts in stock and welded on the bracket in exactly the right place. Possible that the original pipe had been made to fit a g/s? Anyroad, all sorted to my satisfaction, good people to deal with. If they haven't yet amended their Y piece I'm pretty sure they would if somebody was able to evidence the design flaws for them.

I sent them an email last night and got this reply this morning ...

I have a keihin y peice I’m going to be fitting in the next week or so if you’d like some pics?

That would be great Mike. Thanks. Also some thoughts on effects on tick over, pick up etc would be good.

Jay- my friends will not believe this but cash is not the issue! :D it’s having summat that replaces the original w/o causing further issues. Looks and weight saving are a bonus.

We did 'back to back' testing at Rainbow years ago, with the 1150 GS's ...

Fit a Y piece and you might find a little bit more top end, but you will lose a little mid range.

I fitted a Remus system, with a collector box on my 1150 and it certainly had more mid range. Top gear roll ons from 50mph my 'bike would pull away and leave them, but they would come past at about 95mph :D

You need a bit of back pressure for more mid range torque, a straight through system for more top end ;)

Just sayin' like ...

Exactly why I'm reluctant to lose the collector box, Micky. Thanks for the info.

There you go,
I’ve fitted more than a few and can’t say I’ve noticed anything amiss.
That said ,I ride different bikes everyday so it’s not like a bike that you have ridden for many years, and would notice a difference on the first ride,IYSWIM.

:eek Okay What have you done with the original Scottish Peter??

If I still had my stainless G/S collector and downpipes I would send them over but a good mate conned me out of them :aidan

Nice and Light and compact Much Much smaller than the std collector and hooks straight up to the standard tail pipe

those Y pieces are a dose Although they do look like that have made an effort to "Flow" the gases
They are a ballix to set up at idle even when warm (again this is the Older version that actually looked like a T junction )

I can e mail you a pic of that if you want
