I have had my (2013) RT since new for 2 years now, and it's just had its 12,000 mile service.

First service 600 miles £209
Second service 6000 miles £297
Third service 12,000 miles £330

so in 12,000 miles servicing has cost £836. All at Harry Fairbairn Inverness.

The service manager stood by this and told me (in an off hand manner) the next service at 18,000 miles will be nearer £400. I asked him why the engine balance (engine synchronisation) was done at 6000 and again at 12000, they need it at every service, I was told.

To me this is Ducati servicing costs, not an RT.

I'm interested to know if this is standard across the board with RT's ? and are the newer LC RT's any dearer ??

Staggering costs. Go indie and consider taking any bodywork off yourself to cut down on labour?

Bit of a long shot but any chance of synchronising your mileage to get the bikes next service done during the winter months, I know that dealers local to me namely Wollastons and Balderstons offer special winter rates as their workshops are much quieter, labour rates are about 30% less. Or..... If out of warranty, is there an independent near to you. I recently took my 19 year old 64,000 mile R1100RS SE to Steve Scriminger at Scriminger Engineering in Sleaford, good honest service at a reasonable price, £535 to remove overhaul with new bearings, selector fork and seals and refit the gearbox as well as balance the throttles etc. top, top job, there is also an independent called Motoscot near Luton but both a bit of a of a trek for you.
Surely some chaps on this forum can recommend someone up North.

just been told on another forum

'I bought the Honda service plan for my VFR1200 at £575 which covers,'

600 miles
8000 miles
16000 miles
24000 miles.

for a V4 engine, this put a flat twin to shame.

I imagine that that is for cars judging by the mileage allowance of 24k and 2 yrs

Yes I realise that, but I'm only a humble biker. I don't know any BMW indies around my part. And as for Arnold Clark/Harry Fairbairn, the reason BMW make Arnold Clark use the name Harry Fairbairn is because they (AC) have a shite reputation. Inverness is the only HF/AC Motorrad dealer, when their new showroom is build I reckon it'll be cars only. There is no reference in current showroom about Motorrad.

Just had the f&r brake fluid and coolant changed/flushed and new MOT, plus a new exhaust header fitted - which required the rads (2) removed for £69

Local bike shop, run by a factory trained Yamaha mechanic whose work is impeccable

The bike wasn't a BMW, of course............but the work involved is similar

It makes a mockery of BMW dealer service costs, which are truly eye watering

Marshalls (formally Astles) of Grimsby..

15/04/2015 RT-LC 600 mile first service cost £125.00

30/04/2015 GS-LC 6000 mile second service cost £169.00

Do BM's have a service schedule for each due service ? as whenever I take the bike in for service they won't give me a quote for work that needs doing. they say it depends on bike and mileage.

Snap....near as dammit the same for my RTLC at Lovetts Bristol.

£300 for 6k service is taking the piss.

Harry Fairbairns reply to their customer service questionnaire that I completed last night, pretty much what i expected, I don't expect much if anything from BMW UK either.

Thank you for taking the time to complete our online survey. I was sorry to learn of your disappointment with the costs. I understand that Brian Bailey, the Service Manager at the branch has explained to you that costs will vary based on the manufacturer schedule for your bike. Most of our servicing costs for vehicles within manufacturer warranty are generally taken from a mainframe manufacturer menu pricing system and will only vary slightly across different dealerships dependent on the labour rate that is applicable to each particular area/branch.

Please accept my apologies on behalf of Arnold Clark for your disappointment on this occasion.

Not any more it's not.

Ducati (and KTM) have their intervals at 9,000 miles, not BWM's 6,000 which begs the question why a tractor engine needs servicing more often than a high output, more complicated engine?

Mmmmm, I wonder why....................

BMW UK replied, about as much as I expected. But they don't explain why their bikes need £840 of servicing over 12 months or why the engines need balancing every 6000 miles.

Good morning Andrew

Thanks for your email about the service at Harry Fairbairn Inverness. I’m sorry to hear about this – I can understand how frustrating this must be for you.

Most of our centres are independently owned, and set their own charges. The best thing to do is compare service charges before booking your bike in. You can find alternative centres contact details here.

About the sales team – I’ve contacted Barry McDonald, sales controller at the centre. He’s said that he’ll contact you today to discuss this with you.

In the meantime if there’s anything else I can help you with, please get back in touch.

RT LC, 1 year old, 12,000 miles, oil and filter change and brake fluid .... £227.
