The chain would have been selected, on the basis of being the cheapest one that would do the job, by a highly qualified professional

accountant. HTH :D

Perhaps you can look forward to the 800 twin saga of failed chains. At least they're FD chains and not cam chains that drop into the gearbox of a WC when they fail. Still an exciting prospect if they fail half way through a tight overtake manoeuvre.

To come back to this I spent plenty of time the other night cleaning and getting the rust off and then lubing it very very well and three days later when it has not moved from the garage the rust is back

As you can see the roller parts are ok and well oiled

The side plates on the other hand

Now I know it does not look like it but the sides are covered very very well with clean chain lube it feels like setting glue to the touch so they are not dry !

don't bother cleaning it, keep it covered in lube you won't see the rust.

I think there are some piss-poor quality chains out there. Same routine can result in one looking very different to another. Having said that, its always been me to blame when mine has rusted up - usually putting it away after a long ride in the rain.

Co-incidentally, that Missenden Flyer bloke on youTube had the same issue with one of his Panigale this week.

Does no one use drylube? I think its a no brainer, keeps the chain fine and clean without picking up grit and dirt.
I hate the build up of gunge on a chain when chain wax/lube is used.Once it is ingrained onto the chain, around the rollers and on the edge of the side plates not to mention around the front sprocket,it becomes full of grit, then turns into a grinding paste.

Lots of sports bike bods rave about the Wurth dry lube

I am never convinced that it doesn't wash off too easily in the rain but then look at the state of my chain with good lube and a liberal and regular routine !

TBH, I've been using the new wd40 lube, after every ride, and the chain is nice and greasy and rust free. It seems to flick quite a bit, but they all do. It pisses me off that they all say non flick, but they all do.

Just been given a can to test and evaluate ... first thoughts are that it's great. It is dry, shit won't stick to it, you can feel it on the chain, it's like kinda dry, no gunge ... and it won't wash off. Looks like a winner to me :thumby:
