Satnav’s, yes or no???

TomTom route planner is easy to plot routes on and upload to the XT.
Base Camp I could never get to grips with and is a heap of crap, in my experience.

I’m the complete opposite of that. Just can’t get my head round Tom Tom. It’s just nowhere near as user friendly as basecamp and Garmin for me. My zumo 660 must be around 10 years old now and still works fine. I will probably look at using the phone when the zumo eventually dies. I keep trying calimoto and it seems like a good option.

Probably my lack of patience! I just plot on TT and drag the route where I want it then upload the GPX to the Zumo. I do like the Zumo and found it to be pretty much easy to use on a 4k tour, which was my first time of using it.

then to C and then D etc

Thats what route planning is isn't it
For me I plan 10 days of routes , alternate routes when taking a tour .
The beauty of the GPS Garmin method is that route encompasses the roads I wish to take riders on , I can deviate and explore , found that on phones it’s just not the same , pre planned for you not by you . Riders say after tours I take that the routes are so good , plus the fact I could divert , no issues if I wanted , but still get back to the original route . Most days I plan are ( road) min 260 miles , no main roads unless necessary but mountain passes and link roads . There is no way I could do this on a mobile phone , especially in Europe , saying that I do run it in the background as get out in case the sat nav goes down but not as a guide just to get to the destination. I may be stuck in my ways but when others have used my gpx routes when following and on a phone they re route all the time , for example when I turn off the route to show an extra loop road etc.
Routes are great when done on a sat nav but a gps unit allows you to control all , Garmin for me . To add if I did wish to Ato B to C to D I would follow the weather , now that’s fun but invokes a map

It’s a bit like Apple v Android. For many one seems to fit, the other just doesn’t.

After trying both Garmin Nav & TomTom Personally I’d go TomTom every time and that’s now via the app on my phone.

Find the TomTom much easier to navigate around, plus the MyDrive app to plan routes is simple and also easy to share.

The key thing that drove me crazy about the Garmin though was the camera functionality. Either on or off. On includes warning you that a mobile camera was ‘once’ on the road you’re on. Around here that’s every frigging road! Also it fails to know the difference between a single camera and a speed zone. On the TomTom you can select which cameras you want an alert for. It also shows you’re in a speed zone and what you current average speed is.

And no I don’t habitually speed either.

TomTom’s traffic is second to none too and works on all roads via a tie with the mobile phone networks. That functionality is shared with the connected app, but not the cameras, god knows why?

Using your phone means also means one less item to connect (or fail to connect) via Bluetooth.

Use one of the new SP+ wireless charging anti vibration mounts, where the bmw cradle is usually mounted.

Then use Siri voice controls to switch between the TomTom app and Apple Music. Also have a number of automated shortcuts running. So when I connect to the bike via Bluetooth it automatically opens Apple Music, turns the screen brightness up and then runs the TomTom app etc.

Although my ideal set up would be the new bmw connected nav, but running Apple car play instead of their connected ride app. I could use the wonder wheel then just like I can use my cars controls to switch between apps on my phone.
Why BMW won’t give us that I don’t know, but until they do i’ll stick with my phone.

I’ve had both nav 5 and nav 6 and connected cradle, but now I’m a converted WunderLINQ user. The nav 5 is a reliable unit but not very bright, I must have had 6or7 nav 6s that all suffered with ghosting issues. I liked the connect cradle but it doesn’t charge modern phones quick enough and BMW say it’s designed to “keep it charged not charge it”
I liked the app a lot and it wasn’t until it broke I got the WunderLINQ. Now I use scenic for navigation and the wheel still works well with the WunderLINQ and the new wireless one charges at 20w which fully charges my tablet easily but I understand people wanting a dedicated unit, the new one that is not in the dealers yet looks interesting and now BMW have parted ways with garmin it will use Here mapping which is what Tom Tom uses, for most people that system and its algorithms works well, it just doesn’t do off road for the more adventurous amongst us.

I’ve just bought the Carpe Iter system, have a look at their website, it works off a Android based Tablet so I’ve got the option to switch through MRA, Calimoto, TomTom, Locus Maps, OsmAnd as well as Waze and Googlemaps. I can use the wonder wheel and the extra button ring that fits on the throttle. It’s not cheap but it works flawlessly.

I think that will be my next unit, I’m currently like scenic but that is only on iOS at the moment but I use a tablet to run road books and the carpe unit is the obvious choice.

I thought Garmin also use the Here Mapping as this is the maps you use on MRA to send to Garmin

I have recently become a GS1250 owner, so far just been out and about on routes I know well.

Looking at doing the NC500 next May with friends and thinking do I need a BMW Nav system or would I be able to just get away with iPhone hooked up to my quad lock system on a constant charge.

Also thinking about possible trips to Europe as well, what’s the thoughts on this. Do we really need the Satnav system, anyone got any good or bad experiences with either option.

Finally if a BMW Nav system is needed, is the 5 or 6 a one to go for?

Have a look at the new BMW Connected Ride Navigator. The sales staff at your local dealer have nothing better to do than demonstrate all its features.

Armed with this information you will be able to decide whether this or a phone suits your purposes and skill levels.

Ive just logged on to MRA and they have an offer where you get lifetime updates and access to gold membership and the navigation for 149 Euros. That allows you to use TomTom maps or HERE(Garmin) and OSM. You can run it on your phone or tablet for navigation.

Got that and its a great system as it works well with Goole earth and you can check the roads etc to ensure every mile of your tour is as good as it can be , Garmin fell out with Google so made it hard ( view in google earth option) was taken away . Thats why I went to MRA as the option was there and it works so well. I have found some great roads off the beaten track in Spain and France due to the MRA app , I plan on the computer as do not use a phone as I have a GPS unit and a phone is okay and limited but useful at times .

Scenic works with google maps as well, plus it’s a one time lifetime payment

if my sat nav dies, I'll be going the MRA route and maybe using a small tablet as a screen and a laptop thingy..Until then, I'll keep going on with Garmin and base camp, as no real need to change yet
