Service cost

Mine didn't get that far with me, but to be honest, the thought of service costs, and fixing things that might break or drop off made me decide to sell it. It was a tough decision as I loved my 12 very much, but paying the mortgage was more important.

I did consider going the route of self maintenance, but I didn't fancy my chances of working on it given the canbus and on-board computer :nenau

Less miles.....but 2 year service (ABS bike) at Rainbow (South Yorks) £264

:spitfire Had my bike serviced at Motorrad central glasgow today and i left the place a bit bemused i was told that the service would cost around £250-70 but was left dumb founded when hit with a bill of £445.

The pic below shows what was done give me a shout and tell me what you think that would be great

i have found out to my cost that the 6000 service is £200 ish and the 12000 service is £400 ish as i had a 12000 and a 18000 mile service last year within a few months of each other it was all a bit expensive....

Cripes - the £290 quoted above was the most I have ever paid for a 1200 service (and that was for an RT).

Once you're out of warranty, what's the point in paying for the dealer stamp??

Stands you in good stead for goodwill claims I would suggest. Whether that is worth it to you is the decision to be made.

Think I'd be happy to roll up my sleeves and spend a day getting to know the bike, saving myself £320 in the process.... especally as most if it was straight forward checks :thumb

I think for goodwill he might get something small fixed but highly unlikely if it's a major job.. or maybe I'm just a cynic:green gri

dealer stamp........

Taking in what Paul said bowt dealer stamp, there not really worth anything after warranty. I think we can all get a bit anal over dealers. As long as you stick to the service schedule, and the work is done by a reputable independant, using genuine parts there can be no quibble.
Its all a money making scheme anyway. If you go to an independant, more likely than not he/she is an ex bmw mechanic anyway ( Roy for instance in Croston) and take more care about you and your bike.
Waste your money if you wish, but theres always a better way.

Wouldn't disagree with any of the above (apart from possibly the last sentence :)). My point was based on having had some excellent post warranty goodwill support from BM which I think is due to the dealer relationship. Whether that has saved me more than going to an indepenedent is a different question! (But I suspect it has).

Irrespective of price, you can get good value from dealers and independents, it depends on the dealer/independent and what you want from the whole experience

OK so here it is. same service at southport Superbikes £300.53, however it is not just that simple. The attached service spec says that the bike does not need it's brake fluid changing at this service, so I have not included it. hope that this helps

Thanks i know where i will be going for my next service!

Check this, done Today!

I bought this bike in December (1200GS Adv) with 5000miles on the clock. It has been great and made me glad I bought another BMW.

However I just took it in yesterday for a 6000mile service/12month inspection. I thought maybe £250. Got a call saying clutch to be replaced under warranty as some fluid had leaked through a seal and contaminated it. Also rear pads replaced. I thought definately about £250-£300.

Anyway I have just payed the bill and I'm well pissed off!

£457.40

Now, I am not tight by any standards, however I can't help but feel ripped off.

Can you guess who the dealer is? I live in South London and it is NOT South London Motorcycles (they were always very good). It is another dealership that has taken some slagging off on this site before.

Self Service

I would never pay that sort of dosh for a service. As has already been said before,, If its two years old and out of warranty whats the point of the dealer stamp? You probably wont get anymore for it when the time comes to sell/part ex'.

I would suggest an independant BMW boxer service guy/gal or get a Haynes manual and have a go yourself (I do) thats if you are handy with a set of spanners. You will save big cash.

The only probable downside might be, if you have a goodwill claim in the future, BMW may not honour the claim unless youve got the service book dealer stamped. (Anyone got a dealer stamp??) I dunno.

Think you gotta follow your gut feeling on this one.

Still angry!!!!!!!!!!

Bike was registered December 2006 and so still have nearly a year warranty.

I just called a mate who is just going to book his in for a 6000mile/Yearly inspection. He was horrified at the cost. Said he had a big one done on his 1150 recently - 50000mile plus - for £300. He believes I should have 'kicked off'! I don't know what anyone else thinks, should I make an issue of this price? Is it too much? If it was a Ducati I would have expected this price.

Advice required.......

Forgot to mention

Since new clutch fitted it feels like a bag of shit!!! She now judders really bad as you pull away. Should I allow a certain amount of 'bedding in' time?

I had my bike serviced by a local independant specialist a few months ago, at the time it was running like a Swiss watch but I wanted it to have its due service. I picked up the bike last thing as he was shutting up shop and it ran like a bag of shite! Some things on the service sheet he'd given me that he'd ticked as complete were . .
Check / adjust sync,
Check throttle valves TB's,
Check CO2,
Test ride as final inspection and function check.

If he'd have test ridden it there's no way it would have been handed back, so I wasn't going there again. A mate did a TB sync for me and it's been running a lot better but not as good as before it went in.

Today it had it's 31,000 mile service done at Southport Superbikes, It cost me a little bit more than I expected but I'm not complaining, it's running like a Swiss watch again. :clap

Funny thing is, the invoince doesn't show an oil filter, I've had a look underneath and can't decide whether it's new or they've cleaned the old one up. :nenau

Iainw, I am happy that your bike is now back to it's best, I think that the 850 is a cracking bike, and i agree that they are as smooth as silk when set up correctly. as far as your bill is concerned, you have had and been charged for an oil filter, it is the third item down on your bill. The part number is C11.00.1.341.616 but there is not enough room on the description line to see that it is a older r series oil filter. Sorry for any confusion.

there seems to be a huge variation in service costs - my 12000 miler inc. annual inspection (brake fluid change and air filter) was £180 from Clarks in dundee. I can't understand how you've been charged £102 for spark plugs - I'd be querying this as its entirely possible they put the wrong number into the computer.

Service cost update

Just been given £30 odd back because they overcharged on the brake bleeding time by 25mins. They were also not happy that i made this post and showed my bill online.

It makes you wonder had i not put my bill on the internet there is no way i would get money back.

So a note to all if you think something isn't right get on here and the right people will see it. Bottom line is we are all paying far to much for a stamp on the service book
