Apologies if this has been covered before. :)

My 56 plate GSA will shortly be due its 24k service. I have a years BM used bike warranty (bike purchased from Balderston's at the end of April).

If I have the service done by an independent (using genuine parts etc) will this invalidate the Warranty?

Hope not!!

I have an 09 gsa and it has a years warranty left,iv just had its 6000 done by motoscot off here,he uses BMW parts and im assured it wont affect my warranty...........

If the independant is competent and has the necessary fault reading equipment it shouldn't affect a BMW warranty.
But on that age of bike is your warranty the full option version ?, or the " ahh, sorry, but that part isn't covered" lesser version.

In the BMW Extended Warranty policy booklet I believe states in the small print that the service needs to be carried out by a BMW dealer. It's worth reading the booklet before you book your service :augie

I think the extended warranty is covered by a third party through BMW, with lot's of get out clauses and stipulations and lot's of parts aren't covered as they are in the genuine bmw warranty -i'll stand to be corrected in this by someone who knows all the policy details.

When i book in any new 1200 still under warranty i do advise the owners if they want a no quibble warranty claim especially if they may need bmw's help with the bike "just" out of warranty then use a bmw main dealer until the warranty is completely dead, and then come and see me. :D

You may still be covered with an independant servicing, but you could have to jump through hoops to get what you want come an awkward expensive warranty claim ( and lose any saving you may have made on the servicing cost). The dealers own customers will always get the benefit of any doubt. And rightly so, why would you expect any different.

And i'm stating this as an independant, it may lose me some work in the "here and now" moment, but customers appreciate honesty and i usually see them back when the warranty is dead. :thumb

Don't forget this is insurance based cover. From the policy document:

The terms and conditions of the warranty listed below must be adhered to. Failure to do so will result in the rejection of a claim or the termination of your BMW Motorrad Insured Warranty. This does not affect your statutory rights.

1. When servicing your motorcycle, failure to comply with the service schedule recommended by BMW may invalidate this warranty. All service and warranty work must be carried out by an Authorised BMW Dealer or BMW Service Authorised Workshop using only Genuine BMW Parts. Your BMW Service Booklet should be stamped, dated and detailed with the correct mileage at the time of service by the servicing dealer.

I think its fairly cut and dry for the extended warranty, that it has to go to BMW.

The extended warranty is administered by Mondial who are BMW Assist and having read through their booklet it seems to me to be pretty comprehensive with the usual exclusions of corrosion and brakes that would normally be covered within the manufacturers two year warranty.

Under Block Exemption rules manufacturers cannot force a customer to take their vehicle to a manufacturers dealer for servicing during the warranty period yet as a manufacturer still have to stand by the warranty. Clearly if you're going to take a vehicle to an independent it best to make sure you get your service book stamped and a proper copy invoice of works carried out. Getting your mate to service it ain't going to work :augie

The extended warranty is a different matter and as you can now see Mondial insist that to maintain your policy you have to have it serviced by a BMW dealer. It's Modial's policy so it's their rules :bow

Whats wrong with Cannons?? :augie

Been there done that. :blast :D

Thanks for your feedback guys. Think I better stick with Balderston's until the warranty has expired. It would only take something like an FD failure to wipe out the financial benefit of having the servicing done elsewhere.
