Bought new 1200GSA May 2010. 12 months later 3100 miles on clock put in to BMW for 12 month service. Just back from week in Alps 6150 miles on clock and service light is on??? Surely the next service is due at 9100 miles (another 6000 miles) or May 2012 ?

Welcome to the expensive world of BMW servicing schedules, as opposed to every other manufacturer BMW servicing is X Miles AND X months so the bike needs a service every 6k miles AND every 12 months, so unless you do exactly 6k a year you have to service it twice per year.

When I was shopping for a bike the dealers told me it was a simple (and cheap) to service air cooled twin, once I parted with my cash it became apparent maintaining the Space Shuttle would be cheaper.

The bike was serviced 5 weeks ago and has done 3k miles ! I hardly think the fresh oil is fecked in that time or miles!!
No I don't "research" the finer details of servicing before buying a bike. If I were to do my "research" I would not have one as all bikes have some sort of problems. I'm just surprised that I need another service within weeks of the last one.

No, it's every 6000 miles OR every year, which ever comes sooner.

So you'll only need to service it more than once a year IF you do over 6000 miles in that year.

Just go to the dealer and ask for absolute clarification on what you need doing to maintain warrantee, if they provide info and you stick to it you're bomb proof as they will have to honour any reasonable warrantee claim, as soon as it's out of warrantee ditch main dealer and go independent, plenty of brilliant ones around, ABW for example

Contacted Dealer and they said they will just have to do the valve clearances and sync the throttles for the warranty. They will leave the oil for for 6000mls from last service or 12 months whatever is sooner. Result.

Mine was last serviced in June 2009 and has done 11,000 miles (aye, I know I'm slipping) and hasn't exploded.
Might get a service this year.



PS: Engine oil still clear, gearbox oil not smelly....and approaching 60,000miles.

Apart from warranty reasons I cant see why people think BMW can dictate the service intervals. Once you are out of the warranty net set your own routine - or change the oil yourself.......they dont own the bike.

every 6k ,but dont forget get there is two types of service
