Serviced or not serviced !

Did someone at NOG say that this would not void you warranty or was it someone at work?

Did you stamp your own service book?

On purchasing my new GSA I spoke BMW Customer Service and was told that as long as I used genuine parts, kept receipts then the warranty would not be invalidated. Anyway warranty has now expired so no matter. Same for my previous bike 1150RT which I serviced for 7 years from new, and when I sold it the guy was more than happy with my service records.

Did you get the person who told you this was OK to put it in writing?

Have you ever had to make a warranty claim on a bike that you have solely serviced?

Not in writing but recorded his details and time and date of my conversation. Yes I have had to have a warranty claim on my GSA, no questions asked.

Additionally a friend of mine has had a major warranty claim and again no problems with his own servicing.

Were these two claims both service related items?

mine, leaking cylinder barrel (had to strip one side down and re-seal cylinder base) then months later paint flaking off rocker covers. My friends was corrosion.

The point is, you know what you have done and generally you take more time over what you are doing.

My RT had its first and second service done by a main dealer, then I started to do it myself. I found that the valve clearances were way out when I checked them, I corrected them and even torqued the nuts to 7nm (would any dealer do that?) and checked them on every future service and they never needed doing again. Similar experience with my GSA, paid for the first 2 services and on one they replaced the exhaust semi-spheres. When I checked one was out of tolerance and since I rectified this they have been ok. Mileage at present almost 25,000.

So I am happier doing it myself, I know what I have or haven't done and I am sure my servicing is no worse than what a main dealer can do, if not better.

So that's two non service related warranty claims!

I have never heard or seen evidence of any vehicle manufacturer or dealer telling a customer that it is OK for them to service their own vehicle within the warranty period and still maintain the said vehicle's warranty :nenau

We're kind of getting away from the OP's question

Hopefully Terry will be able to come back and clarify who it was who told him it was OK to service his own bike? :clap

I think you might find its also legislation, I seem to remember someone talking about it on here. Even if not, I have personally saved several thousand pounds so am well happy, did need to spend a few hundred pounds initially on the relevant tools but hey ho. If you want to pay for your servicing then thats your choice.

No .... that's Block Exemption and you're talking about home servicing which are two different things
This is an interesting point - are manufacurers obliged to honour warranty claims when a bike has been serviced by the owner?

If so, what legislation is relevant?

How so?

Block exemption means that they cannot force you to get serviced by a main dealer......but they can insist that servicing has been done ACCORDING TO SCHEDULE and to standards, IE using approved parts.

Dated receipts showing brands of filters etc fitted (which DO NOT have to be BMW, they can be 'other brand' as long as they are OEM quality or above) and a signed/stamped service list TO SPEC have been upheld in court as reasons why a warranty has NOT been invalidated :)

BMW DOES however have the right to insist that any work needed under warranty HAS to be carried out at a main dealer, unless otherwise authorised by them.

EXTENDED warranties are a bit fuzzier.......it depends on their TOCs and I've never had one and never read one, but under those, they CAN insist that the extension is only valid if any servicing is 'in-house'....but it will be stipulated in the small print one way or t'other.

I just rang BMW Customer Services
08705050160...then ext 2

Very helpful lady said servicing at home would invalidate the manufacturers warranty even if the work was carried out using genuine parts.

You have just answered your own question ACCORDING TO SCHEDULE and to standards

Under Block Exemption there is no reference to Home Servicing

The BMW Approved Motorrad Extended Warranty always insisted on the bike being dealer serviced but has recently amended this in their T&C's :thumb2

I sometimes wonder if they know what they are talking about. I rang them and asked about the specified engine oil that BMW were putting in the GSA at the time, wanted to know if I could use the Power 1 but a slightly different viscosity as recommended. She said, no. When I told her the handbook gave a variety of viscosities depending on temperature she said she had no idea she just referred to the Castrol web site. Hey, and since that date they have now changed the BMW recommended viscosity at dealers anyway. So what BMW CS say is not always right anyway, it depends who answers the phone.

I am glad I do my own servicing, as I have said before it saves money, time and it is done properly.

I wonder how many warranty repairs are service related anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if most are either corrosion issues, or actual manufacturer faults.

Back to the OP.............................

The dealer obviously hasn't changed the FD oil.

Nobody on here can possibly add anything other than 'my dealer did / my dealer didn't ' so, why not ask the dealer that carried out the service :nenau

Block Exemption applies to Automobiles and not Motorcycles
