Servicing - a dilemma

My point is that the OP is no longer on here so probably couldn't read your somewhat late reply.

The OP did say he'll keep his bike for 10 years until retirement. That was only 4 years ago so might be checking this for info on his 36K service before taking early retirement next year.

Mine always goes to the dealer for servicing. People love to see a nice neat row of BMW stamps in the book when they buy. Plus the dealer services my bike whilst I'm at work, gives me a nice new something to get there and back and I still have my weekend to carry shopping in from the car, clean the gutters etc. I polish the outside and pour fuel in the top. As for the innards - I'm pretty sure it's not full of squirrels but that's about it. Oh, I'll talk crap about double overhead whatnots and valve clearing all day long but ask me to point one out in traffic and I'll pick a number 9 bus every time. Motorcyclist = Good Mechanic hasn't been true for a long time. If you haven't got a clue it won't help (and certainly wont save money) to pretend that you do.

Many 1200 owners service their own bike's myself included. If its something that interests you and is part of the overall biking "experience" its not difficult to do with a few additional tools and a bit of common sense. If it doesn't interest you then keep sending it to the dealer. I enjoy doing it, I know I have done it at least as well as a BMW mechanic can do it and saved a load of dough in the process. I would prefer to buy a secondhand bike from someone who can show some knowledge about their bike, show receipts and servicing information rather than a row of dealer stamps in the manual. Each to their own.

I'm with you Mr.Beemerman, I have an '07 model that has never seen the inside of a dealer since I collected it, I have always serviced it, I've even managed to do the various recalls, (don't ask me how) and it's been 100% reliable, although I've just had to pull it in half to replace the gearbox oil seals and the clutch plate, but it was a problem I was kind of expecting with it being an '07.

Service details

Does anyone know were to find , what work is carried out is a routine on very service. at every interval ( i.e 1 500 miles up to 200 K miles.)

This would be a good gauge on wether to service at home or at the dealers , depending on how complex to task are ..

Sorry if this is a daft question , its probably a simple Internet link out there with this all on..

regards

Tony

Plus, I don't know about the DOHC bikes but the alternator belt is now a 24K mile change.

Or before that if a conscientious maintainer, in my case 17,000 miles.

It was noisy, making a slapping and clicking sound until warmed up. Once removed there were lots of tiny sharp stone pieces embedded in the roots of the vee belt, just tiny pieces small enough to get in under the plastic cover but sharp/hard enough to damage the belt. I reckon it would have failed before reaching 24k.

Great - another dealer bashing thread and everyones an expert!! Nothing changes:beer:

What do you know about 1200's, you only see several everyday.

Anyone would think that seeing so many gives you the advantage of preventing little known problems that owners don't see until it's too late. :D

GSA '10 servicing at 18800

Just had service at 16240 miles as the year was up...then went to pyrenees and back..now it says it needs another one (2 weeks later) as it says next service due at 18800 miles!! or one year which ever the sooner..is this an error or have I dropped a one here by not anticipating the next service at 18800??

Forget it and wait until the 24k:thumb
