Has anybody else had a problem with the sharp screw in the panniers?

It has damaged my brand new arai tour x4 with a deep gouge

BMW have told me they are all the same. They basically said this is how it is nothing we can do really. My reply was that's like having a nail sticking through your seat and saying dont sit on that could be dangerous but that's how it is.

Please comment if you have had trouble as I'm going to pursue this further and other cases would be nice.

Thanks

Matt

Here's the screw

What I did was look in the case , see the nuts, screws, bolts and thought.

Ok I can see why all those are there and they could possibly scratch my helmet etc, etc, etc.

So guess what.

I put my helmet in the nice little cloth bag that can with it.
When the novelty of a new helmet had worn off , I just chucked it in the box , 'cos i had scratched it anyway.

It is called having some responsibility for your actions not expecting it all to be done for you and trying to blame someone else for your stupidity.

Someone else who thinks its ok to buy something brand new but it damages your helmet.

.
To damage your helmet It requires a contribution of unthinking effort on the owners part.

I put a box of eggs in my top box and by the time i got to my journeys end they had broken. Should i be surprised ?.

If you bought a BMW car and sat in it as the salesman hands it over to you and whilst doing so a pointy bolt rips your coat would you say to the salesman "it's ok ill go to halfords and file it down. IM SURE YOU WOULD:comfort

Did you damage the helmet while sitting on the seat of the bike..No.

So a better example of your car anology would be if you clambered into the boot of the car while wearing your sheepskin and trilby and tore it, would you still complain.

i do find it a bit odd that bmw have put a sharp spike protruding into the luggage carrying area. especially when it appears to be utterly, er, pointless :eek

Take it out, either grind it down or find another 8mm screw without the pointy but. :nenau
As my dad would have said " Can someone push me back from the fire as i'm too hot" :comfort

I don't know how anyone can say this bolt is not fit for purpose. On one hand its part of a high tech solution that enable one's 1200 Adventure to travel to far off exotic destinations and not have to worry about pannier lids that won't open due to the vacume created inside whilst travelling 5,000 miles above sea level. Or indeed, to collect the weeks shopping from the nearest Tesco's with the confidence the lids will open. The pointy bit is the real genius part of the design as its real purpose is to be used to prick the shell of your egg prior to boiling, thus preventing the build up of pressure and an explosive egg which is the last thing you need on the annual camping trip to Cornwall. BMW fit it for free - I believe its £29.99 from Touratech.

I'm with the OP on this especially if three of the four bolts were flush :augie

He's clearly spent some wonga with his local BMW dealer so hopefully they will do the decent thing and either sort his helmet/pointy bolt issue out or escalate it at BMW UK to someone who ultimately can :D

PS If the Tour-X is an XL can I have first dibs?

PPS I once buggered a perfectly good Deep Pan Pizza by sticking it diagonally into a extended Vario Pannier then riding home 8 miles over bumpy roads. The good old boys at BMW obviously knew I was going to do this as they had very thoughtfully provided some little rubber bungs on the underside of the case that not only act as feet for the case but also allow you to swill out all the toppings and grease from the said buggered Pizza

A few months ago I took the GSA trail riding and had my top box on the back. it was completely empty apart from a 1/2 kg disc lock and an old pair of waterproof trousers.

I don't know what I was thinking at the time, but was convinced that my smart phone would be safer in there than in my pocket. :blast :blast :D

You know how when you've finished with a cement mixer at the end of the day you put a couple of buckets of water and a few bricks in it to clean it ... :D

Oh dear .... A hundred pieces would not be an exaggeration :D

Ooooops :blast

Have you thought of putting a claim in to WMB for a new phone as clearly, the top box is not fit for purpose (see post #8 for a full explanation) :thumb

WTF... I cant believe BMW have put my life at risk..

My older style panniers do not have that vent and I've been planning over the last 4 years a London to Manchester trip that will take me over the Cat & Fiddle pass - Ive now a real concern that I will not be able to open my pannier get to my sandwiches

Question:
Should I plan a diffent route, maybe the M6 (Im not sure about the toll road though as Ive heard the barrier does not stay open for long enough)?

Could anyone recomend me camping loaction near the buxton end of the pass so that I can set of early in the morning and try and make it withiut having to stop? - And can I book a camping spot in adavance near the entrance (I cant risk a que) - I'll need it in June 2014 if that helps
