I'm told that there is a software update for the 1200GS ECU. Does anybody have any experience as to whether it significantly changes the way the engine runs performs?

They updated this on my toy, delivered 01/10/04, at the 600 service and it seemed to soften the hard take up at low revs.
Having experienced similar roughness with a Ducati 916 I find that after riding the new software for a short time it is difficult to have objective hindsight.
I think your dealer will update on request, though he may try to put it off until the next service, just to ensure you do not save money by diy.
I also found that a sensitive throttle hand, especially on upchanges in the lower gears, really pays off. Hardly any easing of the throttle works best for me. I think this is due to the equally spaced firing order of a big 180 degree twin, the Ducati is less sensitive in this respect with the 90 degree split.

Assming you have an older version, it should:

eliminate the slight flat spot around 5k rpm
reduce or eliminate the loss of engine braking on a closed throttle around 2500 rpm (only some bikes suffer from this)
possibly make slow speed, low throttle work a bit jerky
some have reported increased vibes through footrests
generally seems to make the bike perkier

I thought it was a bike, not a computer game..:D

Its a BMW, the 1200 has got more computing power than Apollo 11 had to land on the moon! (most BMW 4 wheeled products are overloaded with computing systems...see the new series 6 for details!)

Give me some lasers, missiles and a few guns and i can turn my GS into a urban assault vehicle...now that will be better than any computer game :D
