Noticed tonight on the ride home both speedo and odometer were not working at all. I'm sure they were ok this morning. Nothing looks amiss or loose at the speedo drive end so i'm assuming the cable is snapped inside. Anything else that could cause this before i order a new cable? How much of a git is it to swap?

Check that it hasnt just come unscrewed beneath the speedo.
If it isnt that you should be able to just pull out the inner part of the cable after disconnecting at the drive on the wheel to check it.
If the inner is intact, push it fully back in and connect to a drill. If the needle moves then it must be the drive itself that has the problem.

cheers mark i'll check that out. even if it's knackered it doesn't look a bad job to replace anyway.

Great suggestions, Mark, but my money's on the cable being broken by the speedo drive...

Take a look up where the cable is near the telelever

You may find the plastic sheath worn through Water gets in and corrodes inner cable
Remove cable from speedo drive and spin the front wheel if the wee spindle turns your speedo drive component is okay

Check the speedo drive on the front wheel sometimes the plastic worm gear strips especially if the cable inner is worn.

cheers guys. i'll have a look tomorrow and report back. picked up a cheap r1100r drive with a 2.85:1 ratio which i read may go some way to correct the inaccuracy in the reading too. if it doesn't, it cost me £10 to find out.

I've had this a few times with various GS's, each time it's been the cable that's snapped just above the connection to the speedo drive on the wheel.
