speedo stopped working

Have a look down at the left side of the front wheel hub. You'll see a cable going into the speedo drive hub. There is a crosshead bolt which holds the cable in place. Unscrew this and pull the cable out. The cable has a slotted end which fits into the hub. If broken, it's often just a little way from this end of the cable - pull the slotted end out a little and see if it's broken (you may just get a few inches of cable come out in your hand). I'm afraid they don't seem to list the inner cable as a seperate part, so if it's broken it looks like you'll have to buy the entire thing. It retails at about $20 (£12) here...

Mike:)

Get a GPS. Use that as a speedo. Leave the GS one as is. Your bike will be worth more at trade in time. You know it makes sense.

Thanks . Mike.

Will give it a go this afternoon.
D u have to strip off the front end to get to the speedo connection or just the screen?
Best place to buy a cable tuesday if its broke ?

Cheers . Murray

Murray,

remove the screen and the silver painted 'under-screen' - this will reveal the rear (front?) of the speedo. The cable AFAIK is a main dealer part, but I'd check with Motoworks, Motobins and Sherlocks to see if anyone does a pattern part or if they sell the inner as a seperate item...

not attempted to take off cable yet . is it easy job?

I believe the cables do have a tendancy to go. Undo the screw at the lower end of the cable where it goes into the drive hub and try to pull out the end of the cable. 10-1 on says its snapped just up from the end.

Inner speedo cables are a known weakness on the GS. Follow previous instructions to remove, it's a fiddle to get to the speedo housing, and replace with another cable from MBW. Cost? Should be about a tenner.:)

Thought I'd tack this on to the end of a speedo related thread:

Bought an 1150 on Saturday, all is well & clocked nearly 300 miles during the long weekend.

I've heard that if you replace the GS speedo drive with an RT(?) part, you'll have a more accurate speedo?

Is this correct? If so, does the standard GS part cause the speedo to under or over read & by how much? With the existing set up, the clocks indicate I'm doing 90mph @ 5,000rpm or 18mph per 1,000rpm.

Thanks in advance.

Steve
