speedometer drive issue

I have not posted for a few years because I have little to say at the best of times and I have been riding my gs loads.

However

I noticed my speedo was intermittent then stopped altogether. After a strip down a few beers and tags I narrowed it down to the nylon cylindrical worm gear inside the speedometer drive. Seems like the dog on the wheel is slipping over it due to the visible small gouge on the top of the plastic gear. After speaking with Motorworks my regular provider for years, I was told that I will have to buy the whole unit at £40. I checked myself and seems they are right. I don't understand why this plastic gear is not replaceable when it pops out so easy.

Anyone any ideas on how to fix this or if indeed there is a part that I am missing? ???

Hi. This happened to me recently - you have to get a whole replacement drive. Some say that you can use an alternative drive with a slightly different ratio because it's 'more accurate' - don't bother, I tried it.

Make sure you grease it before you fit it.

Have you tried bending the aluminium dogs over the worm gear to ensure sufficient contact is maintained? That's assuming I have interpreted you post correctly.

Yes ditch the dogs seemed straight up to me and yes you did read it right.

Cyrus, I thought that might be the case but i fixed it there tonight for free !

Got a thin piece of fire door seal rope and stuffed it under the dog where there seemed to be quite a large 4/5 mm gap. this raised the dog to meet the nylon gear in the housing. Stuffed it in tight and packed a load of grease in, i am guessing the centrufugaling force will keep it in place, will check it again in a few miles to make sure. Was thinking of a big o ring underneath but i would have needed the top seal and dog out to get it in.

Here is hoping and £40 more beer for me this weekend !!!

Never seen a happier dog with some greased up fire door rope seal underneath it, my dog loves it and now tells me how slow i am going again.
