Hi

I decided to Download Spybot and it found 125 Faults for the first time.

In these though where Microsofts pestcontrol and a couple of other programs and have warned me that i could be vulnarable so...............

Is spybot Correct to delete these or should i add them back in.

Confusing, one says they are dangerous the other says you need them

Dunno, but I've had spybot for about 6 months now and also run AVG free as my protection as Norton Anti-Virus just ed up my system completely. It (Spybot) found plenty wrong the first time I ran it and I got rid of the lot. But the pooter's still working so I figure its OK....

I have managed to bugger a PC up by deleting things that Spybot said I should delete. Rebooted the PC afterwards and it wouldn't boot back into Windows, ended up having to reinstall everything

Get rid of anything Spybot tells you to, it all gets quarantined anyway so if you find you need a certain thing it's got rid of you can get it back.

Run Spybot and Adaware, they pick up slightly different 'pests'.
Also download Acronis privacy suite and Trojan Detection Systems if your feeling really paranoid.
AVG and Zone Alarm are also worth having.

You might also want to switch to Mozilla FireFox and Thunderbird for your email and internet, their very easy to set up and use and you can import all your MS settings. Their not as prone to virus attacks and hacks.

But which do i keep the Microsoft protection or carry on with deleting it with Spybot?

Perhaps i am a bit Paranoid but My daughters schoolwork is on here and it would take ages to back up as its A level stuff.

I also get a very annoying POP up Error that tells me i am effected by pop ups.When it says i can fix it it takes me to a Software for £30.

Its spam i know but i can't get rid of the bloody thing.

i always go with whatever spybot recommends to delete & have never had a problem. others have though.

back up every thing properly first if there is important data there. you should have done it anyway, what if your system gets really stuffed by a virus, software fault or a hard disc fails? how long can it take to copy off your daughters school work?

if you like living on the edge, just rely on windows system restore

Banger, first off, make a back up of everything that you'd miss.

Then repeat every week.......

Onto CD or DVD, and keep them safe, ok????

It really scares me how many people have years worths of digi pics, documents, emails, schoolwork etc etc on their PC's but don't back it all up....absolute madness!!!

As for the conflict you've got in the progs, it's a bit like asking your two big brothers to mind the door at a party, then hiring two professional bouncers to mind the door as well, and being surprisded when the bouncers come in and dump yer brothers at your feet 'cos they were 'suspect'.

Unless you know how to disable progs and use several alternatives to cover all the bases, stick with just one...(of each sort...see below )...but with a few clicks, you should be able to pretty much protect your PC .

There are several different types of security prog......for a 'normal' user lilke yourself, there are three .......Firewall, Antivirus and anti spyware/adware.

Don't use Norton for any of it ...really, trust me on this one, just don't.....

I don't think you'll get many people slagging you off if you use the following;

Firewall......Zonealarm...it's free, it's very good, it stops slimy spotty 16 yr olds breaking in to your PC and nicking your bank details, and it controls what progs can 'speak' to the internet, as well as other machines that you might have networked to your main PC.

Anti Virus..I use AVG (again, it's free)....it sits there all the time, invisibly, it checks all your emails, downloads, websites, it updates every day with new info aboutthe latest virii and it's free.

Did I mention it's free???

ANTI spyware software will stop the extra nasty little progs that can get into your browser and onto your PC..they'll report your browsing habits, pop up adverts and do various things that you don't want them to......at the moment, Microsoft's (free) Windows defender prog seems to be pretty good.....Spybot, Adaware and various others are also good, but only have one running at a time......If I were you, I'd run MS's defender...then you can run the others if you have a specific problem that it hasn't sorted.

These free Anti etc will they not conflict with my Mcfee security centre?
I have doubts over Mcfee it seems to let to much in for my liking and my control settings are OK.

I have to press Yes as i will not get on here foe example and when i tick the box to do you want to remind me in the future i press no ....it bloody well does everytime

Yes, they'd conflict.

You only want one of each type of prog running at a time, so if you were going to use any of these others, download them into a folder called security on your c drive so it's all there ready to go, disconnect from t'internet, uninstall McAfee and install the other progs, then reconnect to t'internet.

You will get lots of pop ups after you install Zonealrm...some will sound really scary and each time you use a new prog for weks after, you'll likely get a box up saying 'xyz prog is asking for permission to access the internet' etc....as long as it was you that opened the prog and you know what it is, say 'yes' and click 'remember this' so it won't happen again.

Do the AVG first, run a full scan, then do Zonealarm and Windows defender.

Ideally you'd install AVG immediately after a fresh windows install so you're starting with a totally clean system, but it may well find a few things that McAFee hasn't seen.

AVG will automatically get its new definitions every day...you'll see it open up and download it....let it do that and it'll be up to date all the time

Do you have another PC connected to te main one Banger???

If you do, you should insstall the same progs on both/all, and you'll need to tell Zonealarm the IP adress of the other machine and tell it that it's ok to let it connect.......we can talk you through that if/when needed

i can say catagorically that mcafee (one of the very best anti virus progs in tests i've seen), zone alarm & spybot will all co-exist happily with each other.

as will AVG, zone alarm & spybot.

as will NOD32, zone alarm & spybot.

just don't have 2 anti virus progs running together.



...and don't have norton running at all.
