Stuck in 1st gear

Went out this morning on my 12GS, which has 1100 plus miles only, when after about a 30 minute ride I had it refuse to select neutral from 1st when stationary.

So I shut it down, restarted and pulled away in 1st and gear selection then seemed to be normal.

After riding less than a mile I parked in neutral. Returning to the bike after about 15 minutes and restarting all seemed ok, until I attempted to select 2nd gear on the move which it would not do. Tried the restart procedure again but this time it was fully stuck and could not be got out of 1st by foot, hand or any trick means I could think up.

Arriving home after a two mile slow trip in 1st I can see no external problem with the gear selector linkage other than that it will not travel sufficiently to select another gear. I suspect a problem with the internal selector mechanism rather than the gear cluster as I neither heard nor felt any harshness, which I would expect if the gears were floating around on the main or layshaft.

BM are due here to fix or collect around 15.00 and I will post on the outcome.

Thoughts anyone??

see my recent threads, mine was stuck in fifth. It required a new clutch and gearbox, with the box being returned to Germany for 'investigation'. Only took a couple of days though.

They still haven't striped and copied the Suzuki gearbox yet then?
Oh dear! Seems like the normal BMW gearbox woes are here. I'll remind you all that my R100GS gearbox (and most airhead boxes) needed rebuilding every 25K! Enjoy the expense on top of you £9500 "investment".

don't be a pen*s, just because you're poor doesn't mean that you have to be bitter. Shall I mention airhead carbs? Clutches? ignitions? and, best of all, brakes?

I'm VERY pleased I've left all that behind......

Sorry to hear about your transmission problems, but it could be worse.

My wife's 1200GS transmission locked-up while riding. Thankfully she was able to skid to a stop without crashing. I'm glad she wasn't at a higher speed at the time.

It was replaced but, we were never told anything except its going to be inspected by BMW.

It was shifting fine when she traded it in on a next years model.

my bike was supplied late Sept '04, after a six month wait, so, no, they're not early bikes. Early 'boxes maybe....

Thanks to you all for information and sympathy. I visited my local BM dealer, Charles Hurst, this morning and they are ordering a gearbox which is due in tomorrow and so I should be back on the road Wednesday latest.

However I have insisted upon transparency in the cause of the failure, and they assure me that they will press BM to provide a report. I will await developments as clearly it is pointless replacing the box with an identical unit if the cause has not been addressed.

Interestingly they told me that this spate of 'box failures is not reported on the dealer access only BM failures site. And I am the first in Norn Iron. So I will be telling them about your experiences if you will be so kind as to post details of the bike, where and when purchased, mileage and approximate date of failure along with any facts you think relevant.

Incidentally, my bike was also a late September 04 delivery.

It would do until you start to read of all of the gearbox and final drive failures on 1100s and 1150s...

That drivel does get a bit old. A good friend just sold his '02 1150GS as BMW couldn't keep it running. Odd, yes but bad things happen. Some 1200's are now getting close to 20k miles with no problems. Others blow up at 1k.

I rode a 1200gs the weekend just gone and i swore the gearbox was very sloppy. I am afraid to say it was one of the reasons i cannot recommend the new 1200GS. £9300 is a lot of money to pay for a crap gear box. I also came to the brand with an open mind but its well known outside of BMW circles their gearboxes and clutches are too suspect.
