Submarine GS

adventure is 720w standard 600w,outwardly the same, I was going to just leave it on there, not sure if canbus will like it ,cant see it hurting more juice to battery I reckon,

started a new thread about changing the engine, its being refinished at the moment as there was a lot of corrosion on the cases:thumby:

oh and i found the engine number under the righthand cylinder:thumby:

The heads and barrels are factory black with a sliver crankcase, I think its an adventure engine.:nenau

The 1200 Adventure didn't come out until March 06 and when it did, it didn't have black heads and barrels however the 2008 model year bike did so it may be a later motor than you think?

Ive been looking all over the net for that info Cheers,
Any idea how I can ID it from the engine number? again plenty of info on the older stuff but not 1200's

If you have the engine number then I would have thought that one phone call to your local dealer would have that sorted :thumby:

2008 was a Model Upgrade year in which (I believe) BMW gave the motor a tweak in anticipation of the arrival of the Twin Cam in 2010

I've got the 2008 adventure. Biggest issue is crap paint. The steel frames had next to no paint and corrosion to match. The engine has incredibly tough paint, but all paints fail sooner or later. Corrosion tracks underneath causing hidden damage.
The front cover paint fails at the bottom belt cover holes and bottom casing screws. Stone chips are not the issue (at least not on mine) as the centreline in unmarked.

The gearbox is a **** to disconnect but they probably all are. In the gearbox case bolt holes, I've tapped out the top RH bolt/dowel hole to M10. Next time I can jack the gearbox off the engine.
The bottom dowel/bolt hole is too long for normal M10 taps but does have levering lugs just take care with the paint.
I doubt canbus will care about alternator output watts. It will care if there's is not enough of them so bigger is better.

Lol you might want to invest in some anti fouling paint ready for your underwater adventures :D

So I managed to change the engine, I left the front end and front frames and ecu,abs pump, wiring harness together by rigging up ratchet straps from above, engine was then slid underneath on to axle stands underneath the cylinders and everything lowered down onto it.

If i do it again i would remove the alternator as that was the tricky bit getting the engine in with it on, not really hard but easier without.

I then had then pull back on the engine to get the front swingarm back in, that was the trickest part tbh.

A few niggles that threw me for a while but all good now.

After a remap the new engine is putting out 97hp & 80ft lbs at the rear wheel :thumby:

I will post some pics shortly but my crafter van has now gone down with a immobiliser problem:nenau

Well done mate.....:thumby:

I presume you'll not be deep fording again in a hurry???????? :green gri

Well done. Not a job for the faint hearted.
I did my 2008 GSA frame strip out in similar ways but TBH regretted not fully stripping the beak assembly from the engine. It really was a pig to realign. But I also stripped out the front frame and headstock.
I had a Merc Vito back in 2004 with Bosch electrics and dodgy immobiliser as standard. You'd have thought that would be sorted by now.

check out the bend in the con rod,
con rod 1.jpg
con rod 2.JPG

that caused piston slap and wear to the piston and bore,
con rod 3.JPG
con rod 4.JPG

it had done 98k up until this, the rest looks in remarkably good order to be fair, there is some side play on the con rod at the big end, not sure how much is allowed though:nenau

The bolt on the camshaft sprocket was fucking tight! I had to chisel it to get it moving.

The rod bent so the big end shells will be stuffed. But if crank journal looks clean and measures within tolerance, the bottom end might have survived. You might get way with new cylinder, piston and con rod.

Next time whip out the secondary spark plug and fit one of these. ;)

Van was number 6 engine control unit relay, wankers at vw van centre don't have a clue, sorted it myself.

Update

Thought Id give an update to this as Ive had a problem since I fitted the replacement engine and it its taken me this long to find it.

The engine has been sweet but not just " snappy" or "sharp" as i would have liked, also there was a stumble/misfire at around 3.5 k,sort of like having flem in yr throat, it would only do this if you were gentle with the throttle, give it a handle full and it would be clean right through,

This was pissing me off big time as you spend a lot of time there, fuel consumption was higher as well, although i think this may have also been a result of giving it more gas to get through the stumble,

Tryed everything I know and scoured the worldwide forums and tryed some of that as well,

injectors,
throttle bodies balanced,
new plugs,plug colour good,
coils,
fuel pump regulator,
cleaned and checked all wiring and connectors to everything,
gs911,reset everything,
changed fuel,
checked pump in tank,

Ready to throw towel in and buy another bike I rechecked the valve and rockers clearances,

R/h cylinder inlet valves were 2thou too tight. 15 thou feeler gauge went in snugly no problem:thumby: opened them up a bit and VOILA cured it.:thumby::thumby::thumby:

Immediately when i started it I noticed a change in the exhaust note and the urgency was back.

When I first set the clearances I knew that they were on the snug side but didnt think they would cause this, just goes to show you never stop learning.

So I would say they prefer more gap than less :thumby:

Its on 101k now:clap

Nice one Bluebird. I should give you a shout the next time I do Strata Florid on my GSA LC. Meanwhile you have plenty of time to rig up a snorkel for yours, which has been done before!

(The LC doesn't need a snorkel as air intake is v high.)

fucking stumble misfire has appeared again:blast thought it was valve clearences, checked them again all good must have been something I disturbed when in there, possible intermitant fault in the wiring to the coils maybe:nenau, doing my head in.:blast
