Swinging arm failure

Looking at the first series of posts on the matter it could be rear axle pivot bearing seizure that may have caused the issue-looking at how the remaining chunk of swingarm attached to the final drive is positioned. Only a theory though.
Is the current owner the original owner ? If not what kind of life has the bike lead previously ie has it been involved in a smash ?
As usual on here everone's an expert giving an opinion without knowing all the facts apart from a few folk have a modicum of common sense.
The guy's got his bike fixed -great. Has he got any form of warranty? Sounds like NO.
Persuing a grievance with a dealer because you don't like the answer given is a waste of time. Any dealer worth their salt will have made the correct approach to the powers that be and await a reply.
Answers are based on the information given not just because its the wrong time of the month.
A polite letter to customer service outlining all the facts is a far better approach than starting a war of words with the dealer and on here.
Lastly it defies logic why Mr Rasher still has a GS given some of his comments

swinging arm failure

Sad day..............
A12 at 6:00am this morning .... and bang ......

Swinging arm has shattered, failed with all that entails......

Ended up laying on its side in the middle of the A12

Has anyone else had this happen? I'll get some pictures up when I can....

What to do next...... :nenau

Terry

what was final outcome ?.Did b.m.w find a fault in casting? Was bearing seized?.After seeing this post at the time have often wondered what happened. Hope everything worked out for Terry :beerjug:

I'm glad your ok!

I had a total failure on an older R1200GS on the motorway with the missus on the back - lucky to be able to slide to the side of the road with the back end locked up and fishtailing all over the road. It hasn't put me off buying 2 others.

Hi Big Pete,
"worked out"...... sort of.... I had to use my own insurance to sort it... and BMW would not entertain looking at it...... nearly £5K later it was back on the road. In hindsight I would prob' have done it all myself from parts sourced elsewhere....
Insurance was due last weekend infact.... Oh they took the PI** I expected it to double (No NCB and all that...) ....350% increase..... I've sadly gone elswhere and as expected got it for just under double last years....
I've done another 14000+ miles on since and the confidence is back to what it was before in riding the bike. I still use it everyday come rain or shine I still use the dealer, thou' more because I have to.... warranty and all that.
Thanks for asking

Reason for the failure..... I think the issue has been explained as aliens throwing something at me.....?

Regards
TJD

Flip yu have a LOT of faith in BMW

I'd be straight elsewhere after the first failure .

Maybe - but I assumed they sorted some things out for the 08 and 10 bikes and so far, fingers crossed I haven't had another issue.

Something came through the cases and tore through the fuel lines too - the bikes was p***ng petrol everywhere and I'm surprised it didn't go up! Fulling loaded with tents (for two bikes), the worst was when I went to pull in the clutch and it was locked out solid! Scary moment sliding across the motorway.

I was looking at an S1000RR to replace the blade but have read and heard about gearbox issues on them - a friend races in Thunder Sports and is moving up to 1000cc next year - I couldn't understand why he wasn't going for a S1000, but sited gearbox issues with a number of owners - but surely you can make the gearbox stronger for less than trying to get 20bhp more out of Honda??

TDJ - if that was me I'd be very annoyed, I hate paying too much insurance!
