Switching her off

If I'm on a slope, sidestand down in 1st, otherwise key.

May be of some use to oil the lock barrel sometimes too. :beerjug:

Using kill switch to stop the engine just feels wrong to be - it's a bit like shutting down a computer by pulling the plug instead of shutting down tidily.

So I always use the key.

Key unless you have a Benelli. You apparently have to knock off the kill switch when you leave them at night because there is still a feed to the instruments. If you don't you have a flat battery in the morn!!!!!
We had them on the ride outs at the NEC and it's true. (Benellis instructions to keep them going.) :nenau

I leave the keys in the Merc and in the bike, I have 3m walls with electric fences and 2 Bull Mastiff,s you want the vehicles that bad, take them, just leave us alone.

just re-visiting this thread...

Welshman, I'd love to see a pic of your mastiffs!

After more than 100,000km and 8 years of riding my 1100GS I have almost always used the kill switch ...... I've never read a thread on this site about a kill switch failing ....yet....but have read about plenty of problems with ignition switches shorting out and problems with the wiring connections to the switch....the kill switch is designed to kill the engine....that's waht it's designed for and that's what I use it for :nenau

But we all still use the key even when the bikes engine has been switched off to turn the electrics off so if its going to fail it will still fail regardless !!
:augie

OKAY OKAY

So how ever you kill the engine you still have to turn the key ANYWAY

So give the poor kill switch a break....

Apparently on my aging NT650V I can hit the kill switch at 80 on the M1 without moving my thumb from the throttle. :mmmm

Or perhaps it was the wind blew it

In any case, it's not too nice when the engine dies at speed like that. Next time I will turn the key :hide

Use the key, but if stopping on a hill, I use the sidestand.

I always stop my bike by running it slowly up a hill in a high gear until it stalls, then to start it I simply turn it round, run it down & bang it into gear.
This saves any wear on the stop switch or starter motor. Its also very environmentally friendly by re using the energy needed to stop the bike to start it. :boozer

You let your 1200 GS run????

Seriously - side stand, then switch off key. Tried the kill switch once in 3 years.:thumb2

Is this turning off at the key think a recent development? A guy at work who recently passed his test mentioned it to me and another colleague because we always use the kill switch. We both passed our tests 15-20 years ago. My instructor (who was also a paramedic) always taught us to use the kill switch as then it becomes automatic in an emergency. Also i've been riding dirt bikes since I was very young and they only ever had a kill switch.......i've never had one fail except for getting water in.

I use the key if I'm going to get off the bike, but if I'm stopping in traffic or to discuss directions etc., I just touch the kill switch enough to stop the bike but not enough to fully knock the switch to off. That way, the bike's ready to go again, with the minimum of fuss.

*moves little finger... engine off*... wow!

Does this thread actually have any point? The day i find a bike that passes the current from the coils to the kill switch... i will do it with my nutsack... fair enough? (sorry to who's ever bike that will be... but it wont be... because it wont happen)

Im a kill switch man... in any given ride i might stop / start the engine several times... kill switch has less moving parts than a ignition key and even if you broke the nob off so you couldnt use it... you can eaily bodge it to allow the engine to work... and then turn it on and off with the key until you can get it fixed... amazing!!!!!!! I think i might patent that idea and enter dragons den....

Never heard of not using the kill switch before, until the other day when my father in law told me thats what he was told by his instructor? Then I came across this thread. I use kill switch unless i run out of petrol or fall off the bike! :JB
