Baglux vs Touratech

I agree with Zwerver about the side panniers being hugely useful, but there are other options apart from the Touratech ones. I have a Baglux (with an Omega bag) which is pretty huge, but you can still see all the clocks, and a pair of Aerostich Tank Panniers, which are deadly expensive but one of my favourite items.

Simon McCarthy had a set on his bike, and they haven't yet featured in his ever increasing 'whats broken' list, so I remain hopeful as to long term durability.

I have just bought a BMW tank bag, Will it rub away paint from any areas of the tank and if so whats the best way to prevent this.

Get yerself down to Hein Gericke (or any Oxford products dealer) and purchase a sheet of webbing - designed/sold to go on sports bikes for when they attach their soft luggage. With a pair of scisors or a craft knife you can customise this for fitment under your tank bag - as well as protecting your tank's shiny paint it's very grippy too.

Just remember to take it and your bag off regularly to wash/polish as the build up of road dust/grime is the killer. HTH

"Wonder Web" from bike shops seems to be very expensive.

If you have a look round your local DIY stores, some of them sell what appears to be an equivalent product - it's sold as "non-slip matting".

I've seen it in a few places - Homebase, B&Q and Wilkinsons I think - and you get 1.5m x 0.5m for about £6

And you get a choice of colours!

Bike shop stuff I've seen is a lot smaller than this, costs a tenner, and only comes in black.

Joined this a little late but I have to throw my hat in the ring for the Touratech item with side panniers. A fantastic piece of kit. Doesn't move about like my old Baglux and is, I think, a far higher quality.

Downside is the bloody zip that attaches the bag to the tank harness. Not as easy to unzip the bag as it is to unclip a Baglux. Cheaper than a Baglux though.

Wonder web ? Great stuff. Keeps the base absolutely solid and protects the tank.

I had no problems with cutting out the hole for the petrol cap. I put some black gaffa tape round the edge to stop it fraying. Seems to have worked.

Baglux Harness

Sorry to seem a bit dim but I've recently acquired a baglux harness and tankbag for my 1100GS, but I don't seem to be able to work out the best route for the straps !

The front ones seem to want to pass from one side to the other, but that gets fouled by the forks, and there doesn't seem to be much framework to go round at the sides.

Doing the same to a Honda Blackbird was a 5 minute job.

Any advice, or pics appreciated.

Come on all you guys with Baglux covers lets give Nick a warm welcome to the site and give him plaenty of detailed advice including wherever possible photos of how to fit the Baglux tank cover.
By the way, I definately havn't just got one myself and can't figure out how to put the thing on .............!!!!

I had the same problem and johnnybmwboxer sent me this, it works!
"Hi Rod,
Good to see you joined the GS Club.
The harness - tricky one !!! I presume you've got an older style one ie all
webbing straps and buckles (no rubber clamps)
If so it goes like this -
Fix headstock 1st loosely - make sure it goes against underside of
headstock and not against any brake/clutch pipes.
2.Fix both sides at front to small black downpipes that run diagonally down
inside of tank (next to forks and oil cooler hoses)
3.Pull off black plastic panel (lower r/h side of tank) and attach that
strap to horizontal frame rail behind r/h injector body.
4. Do the same for l/h strap -attach to horizontal frame rail , fiitting
behind l/h injector body."

Now only 2 straps to go!!
5.These fit at front under the tank - one in front of the Telelever shock
absorber and one behind it- ie runnning parallel.
That should be all straps located loosely- now pull up together , taking up
the slack to ensure a perfect fit. Once all is tight and fitting ok -
replace black plastic lower r/h tank panel ,making sure strap is behind it
and hey presto - all done !!!!

Baglux aftersales service.

Having managed to lose one strap from my Baglux tank cover when I took it off prior to it's service, I telephoned Baglux and asked if they could supply a spare. The following morning a pair of the straps was delivered ie less than 24 hours after the phone call - and no charge. Absolutely brilliant service (and very pleasant on the phone too). The bag that I use is the Alpha, which is first calass and extremely useful.
