My dealer fitted the tax disc holder to the front bolt attaching the sidestand switch cover to the frame. I noticed today that the lug the cover was attached to had fractured, pic here:-

I think the extra weight of the holder had caused the problem. I don't see how it can be welded without making a mess of the paintwork.

The only other place I could find to move the tax disc to on the (UK) nearside of the bike was the attachment point for the rear grab rail. It doesn't look too good here, and by Murphy's Law the thread stripped on the bolt .. doh! :(

Has anyone found a better place?

Colin, my certificate of money donation to the install-more-speed-cameras fund was originally located at the front of the cylinder head - it was like having a goverment subsidised non-working headlight... *ugly*

... So I moved it...

... To the same location that you had yours on...

It's been there for over 3,000 miles now. I've got a silver (chrome) one just JohnP is sporting at the exhaust hanger, however, mine is angled higher (say 11 or 12 o'clock compared to your 9 o'clock).

I'm going to keep a close eye on mine now!

How long was your tax disk there for..?

"How long was your tax disk there for..?"

Since July, 4200 miles. It was moving for a while though, but I thought it was just a tab in a slot and supposed to be like that..

I think the windscreen solution is the most elegant, just a little easy for someone to lift it though. Bit like Pay & Display parking tickets on a bike ...

My tax disc holder is a little bulky for some of the solutions. It also let in water and the disc is a bit tatty now. I usually wrap them in cling film but this was fitted by the dealer.

About the broken lug, should I insist they weld it up, risking burnt paint and a bumch of grapes hanging off it, or should I just stick a cable tie round it?

More alarming, I read in the 8000 mile report on Tobin's thread that weld had broken on the sidestand itself

My Gatso funding certificate is bolted to the front of the cylinder head...i've been intending to move it for nearly 3000 miles now

Best part is it is now sooooo caked in road muck and the like i think it is soaked as well as being completely illegible.

Apparently some daft Quango decided bike tax discs should be displayed in the first 3rd of the bike like other vehicles...morons

Yeah, i think the letter of the law says they have to be near the front of the bike and on the nearside. Can't say anyone I know has been hassled for displaying in the wrong place.

When i got done for doing 99 on the M1 on my VFR, the coppers who stopped me, couldn't find the tax disc and i showed them where it was (mounted to the chain guard) and they didn't seem to fussed about it being there....

mind you they didn't seem too fussed about the race cans either when they gave me a FPN....as opposed to a visit to the beak!

I've got mine stuck to the inside of the screen - bottom left , looking from the riding position - with one of those see through adhesive single use licence holders which costs about 50p from bike shops, not very theft proof but I've done this with all my bikes over the last 10 years or so and never had one nicked or soaked / covered in sh*te...yet. Touch wood. The adhesive used has never damaged any of my screens. I believe there is a version available which is suposedly tamper proof, so the licence is destroyed when you remove it and its covered in warnings to that effect, but I have never used one.

Cling Film!

Wrap it up in cling film and then put it in !! Aghh!!

I put my holder (after scouring the bike for somewhere/anywhere and settled on a bolt through the bracket thingy that is part of or near to the rubber air inlet tube thingy on the off side (possibly near side too). Just fits, out of the way and stays reasonably clean.

Off side is more visible (if you want) when on the side stand or exhaust side down in a river!

Also have a Ducati and hence my technical expertise is right up there.

Bugger! That's where mines fitted. I'd better relocate it ASAP. Seems pretty bad that the lug fractured though. Surely a tax disc holder can't weigh much!

Colin, I'd be more concerned with the broken lug than where to place the tax disc. With all the salt on the roads at the moment your frame will corroding through rapidly with bare metal exposed. The dealer put the tax disc holder there so I'd take it back to them pronto and get them sort it out for you. Whatever you do don't just leave it. I'd be very interested to hear what happens.

My thoughts exactly - I don't think this is solely caused by the added weight of a tax disc - I suspect a dodgu weld too. My disc sits there very neatly and it's very stable. I'll keep a close eyey on it, of course... but like you say, surely it should break by the weight of the tax disc.

Mines fitted to the same place and is OK although I've only done 4500miles from new. That lug is supposed to take a few knocks from the guard/cover so if its broken off it must surely have been a faulty weld. Guess I'll just keep an eye on it (when I'm not checking the rear wheel for play, the rear pads for premature wear or any of the other paranoid activities that form part of my pre-ride checks!).
I'd insist on an as new repair, this should not happen on a £10000 bike.

On the silencer hanger bolt, between the frame lug and the hanger itself. It does'nt interfere with the panniers and still able to get a hand around the frame to be able to pull the bike onto the centre stand. It works OK with the type of tax disc holder I'm using, although I suggest you check it out with yours. It also stays reasonably dry and free of road crap. See attached pic.

Moved mine to the same place as JohnP. I removed the sidestand guard and checked the welds on the lug and the sidestand. Both look in good condition and are fairly substantial.

Mines fitted as below, nice and neat and out of the way.

I see you have a supply of the amber nectar there under the bike, can we all come round and discuss where to put the tax disc?

Remains of the summer bbq. About 150 cans left over from the original 500. Just enough to keep me going over crimbo.

This is a good place

Managed to get mine on here. Out of the way and keeps pretty clean.

Wrapped paper disc in cling film first though.
