I'm new here gents. Just bought a 30th anniversary GS1200 and was well chuffed with it till this Sundays ride out running it in. 3 times when I came to start it, the ignition switch was totally dead and only worked after turning it off and on again a few times. It looks like an intermittent fault with the red ignition/on/off switch on the right side. I'm off to France in a couple of weeks, so am now concerned it's going to let me down over there. Never had this sort of problem with anything ( Japanese ) else and considering it's brand new, I'm not that impressed. I'm going to get it looked at when I take it back to Allan Jefferies for it's 1st service on Friday, but thought I'd ask if anyone else has had a similar problem/experience and any suggestions for a cure, cheers.

Nope, not had any issues at all. Picked mine up on 1st September, and done 1200 fault free miles so far:bounce1

You're in the wrong area for that sort of query Tobo, I'll shift your thread over to the 1200 Technical section for you. :)

Teething problem

Thanks Duchess. Actually tried to post in the technical bit but was told I'm not allowed. Is there a fee or something else I need to subscribe to ?

It's a brand new bike.

Ride it back to the dealer's or get BuMW to recover it if it won't start or keeps failing en route.

They will investigate / mend under warranty, most probably.

The switch itself is electronic, easy to replace for a dealer, costing about £40.

Mine did the same... but after 50,000 miles.

I am with Wapping. Why are you even thinking about taking it on holiday without getting it fixed for free? A couple of weeks is more than enough time to get it sorted out.

Teething problems

Thanks everyone. As I said I was taking it back to get it sorted at it's 1st service. Took it back to Allan Jefferies who swapped the switch unit, no questions - seems OK now. 1st service cost £100 which I thought was OK and the dealer was very professional / helpful about the whole thing. Only downside was having to ride there and back in torrential rain - about 2 and a half hours - but at least I know it keeps going in the rain which is more than can be said for the Rev'It kit I had on. Cheers again.
